A ‘display malfunction visit workshop’ notification on the instrument cluster is an indication that the information on the dash may be inaccurate. A blown fuse, faulty SAM module, or battery issue can trigger the warning.

Before attempting to replace the SAM module, you want to exhaust other options, as the module doesn’t come cheap. So, you want to conduct a full system scan to ascertain that a defective SAM module indeed caused the failure.

Mercedes Instrument Cluster and “Display Malfunction Visit Workshop” Warning

The instrument cluster has several gauges and warning lights that update the driver on the status of various systems. It is mounted behind the steering wheel directly in the driver’s line of sight for an unobstructed view.

The instrument cluster relies on different sensors. And the failure of any of the sensors will invariably result in the display of inaccurate information on the cluster. But with Mercedes Benz, the ECU triggers a display malfunction warning to notify the driver of the possible error.

The speedometer, fuel gauge, and turn indicators may also stop working when the display warning appears on the DIC. The central locking system may also not respond to commands except at close range. The headlight and other electrically controlled systems may also stop working.

Possible Triggers of a “display malfunction visit workshop” Message

Below are the possible factors that could set off a ‘display malfunction visit workshop’ warning.

Checking for a blown fuse

A malfunctioning fuse can also cause a display malfunction. All the electrical components in a vehicle are tied to a corresponding fuse to prevent a blowout during a power surge.

The failure of the fuse linked to the display system or sensors working with it can trigger the display warning. Before checking other possible causes, you should check that all fuses are working.

Faulty SAM Module

A defective SAM module can also trigger a ‘display malfunction visit workshop’ message. SAM stands for Signal Acquisition Module, and Mercedes-Benz has used them since the mid-90s.

It sends and receives data from sensors, switches, and controllers while monitoring the systems. The failure of the SAM module stalls data transmission from the sensors. This hinders the instrument cluster from communicating with the vehicle sensors.

The vehicle triggers a display malfunction warning to notify the driver that the information on the dash may be incorrect.

Mercedes vehicles often have more than one SAM module. And a display malfunction warning is usually because of the failure of the rear SAM module. Ordinarily, the module can last the vehicle’s lifetime, but water intrusion or a broken wire connection will cause it to fail.

Battery issue

A low battery or an issue with the battery control module can also set off the display warning. The battery powers all the electrical systems, sensors, and modules in the vehicle. And the battery control module regulates the battery voltage and the charging process.

The failure of either will affect electricity distribution. This invariably stalls the sensors, resulting in the display of inaccurate data on DIC. This prompts the vehicle to set off the display malfunction warning to notify the driver.

How to Fix a ‘display malfunction visit workshop’ Warning

Check for a blown fuse

You want to inspect all the fuse boxes in the vehicle to check that all the fuses are working. Check the fuse box in the engine bay, trunk, and the one inside the vehicle. Identifying a blown fuse is straightforward. A visible gap in the wire or a dark smear inside the glass signifies that the fuse is bad and needs to be replaced.

Tackling a defective SAM module

You should only consider the possibility of a failed rear SAM module after exhausting all options. Because besides the fact that the module rarely fails, they are also expensive to replace.

Oftentimes, the module fails due to water intrusion. Exposing the module to liquid can short it or lead to corrosion which eventually causes it to fail. A broken wire connection or excessive current draw can also cause the SAM module to fail.

A broken wire connection is still the cheapest when dealing with a failed rear SAM module. Most of the time, all that is required is to fix the broken wire connection.

But when the module fails due to water intrusion or excessive current draw, you may have to replace it. So, you should be sure to tackle the source of the problem to avoid recurrence. Look for how the water entered the module or the cause of the current draw.

Some second-generation MLs had faulty tail lamp seals, which exposed the rear module to water entry. So, if you drive a second-generation ML, check the condition of the tail lamp seal when replacing the rear SAM module.

Fixing the battery issue

Two factors could have triggered the display warning when dealing with a battery issue. A faulty battery control module or a low battery.

The failure of the battery control module is usually caused by jump-starting or trickle-charging the battery. And something as little as having a poor ground connection on the battery control module will cause it to malfunction. So, you should also check that the battery control module has a stable ground connection.

If the battery is low on charge, recharge it. And check that it is holding charge or get a replacement battery. Check that the battery maintains between 12.2 and 12.6 volts while the vehicle is off.

Disconnect the negative terminal for about 20 minutes after solving the battery issue. That should help clear the display malfunction warning.

Final thoughts

The failure of the instrument cluster rarely happens. Since its failure is mostly caused by the breakdown of the rear SAM module, which also rarely fails, except for water intrusion. However, a battery issue or blown fuse can also cause its failure.

And when it fails, the vehicle triggers a display malfunction warning to notify the driver that information on the instrument cluster may be inaccurate.

Several factors, such as a faulty instrument cluster, wiring issues, speed sensor failure, control module failure, or a low battery voltage, can cause a malfunctioning odometer in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It’s important to have the vehicle inspected by a certified Mercedes technician to diagnose and repair the issue and ensure the accuracy of the vehicle’s odometer.

Learn the problems that cause Mercedes-Benz ODO issues and how to use a Mercedes-Benz All System Scanner to diagnose cluster problems by following the procedures below.

There are several possible reasons why a Mercedes odometer may not be working. Some common causes include:

  1. Faulty instrument cluster: The odometer is typically located within the instrument cluster, which is the dashboard display that shows the vehicle’s speed, fuel level, and other information. If the instrument cluster is malfunctioning, the odometer may not work properly.
  2. Wiring issues: Damage or corrosion to the wiring that connects the odometer to the rest of the vehicle’s electrical system can prevent it from working properly.
  3. Speed sensor failure: The odometer relies on a signal from the vehicle’s speed sensor to accurately display the distance traveled. If the sensor is not working properly, the odometer will not function correctly.
  4. Control module failure: The control module that controls the odometer is responsible for processing the input from various sensors and displaying the correct information. If this module is not functioning properly, the odometer may not work.
  5. Battery voltage problem: A low battery voltage can also affect the odometer’s performance.

It’s important to have the vehicle inspected by a certified Mercedes technician to diagnose and repair the issue and ensure the accuracy of the vehicle’s odometer.

Symptoms

It is not uncommon for the Mercedes-Benz instrument cluster (IC) to stop working or gauge malfunction. Here is a list of the most common symptoms:

  • Mercedes Instrument Custer is dead.
  • Dashboard Gauges not working
  • The instrument cluster is too dark and hard to see.
  • The engine starts, car runs, but the cluster stays off.
  • Older models suffer pixel issues, typically with the LCD of a clock or gear display.
  • The speedometer, tachometer, fuel, and temperature are not working.
  • Turn signal arrows on IC are not working.
  • Gauges, tach, clock, speedometer, fuel level, and coolant level do not work.

Troubleshooting

1. Check Cluster / ODO

dead mercedes instrument cluster

The instrument cluster itself may fail. In such cases, the cluster needs to be replaced or repaired by a professional. Mercedes-Benz dealers generally do not repair defective clusters; they only replace them. Finding an independent repair shop specializing in instrument clusters can save you money.

When installing a new cluster, you need to use a scanner to read and transfer coding to the new cluster. This includes transfer mileage, drive authorization, user settings, etc. This must be performed with a professional scanner such as the Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnostic scanner.

2. Check for a Blown Fuse

instrument cluster fuse

Picture of a good instrument cluster fuse.

If nothing on your instrument cluster works, the problem could be a blown fuse. If the instrument cluster doesn’t turn on, doesn’t light up, and none of the gauges works, check the instrument cluster fuse box on the dashboard’s side.

If the instrument cluster fuse blows, it indicates a problem in the instrument cluster or a damaged wire harness.

3. Battery

battery causing mercedes instrument cluster problems

Low battery voltage can cause instrument cluster problems. The first indication is a warning message stating: “Battery protection, comfort functions temporarily switched off.

This issue is often caused due to a partially discharged battery. Jump-starting the car may cause the instrument cluster to malfunction or flicker. If your gauges work erratically or seem to jump, the problem could be a lousy voltage regulator.

Fully charge the battery or replace it if needed for the instrument cluster to operate normally. Some Mercedes-Benz S, E, ML, and GLS models have two batteries. The main battery (G1) and a second auxiliary battery (G1/7). Both need to be tested and fully charged.

Jump-starting the car incorrectly can cause permanent damage to the instrument cluster. Check the ground (negative) connection at the battery terminal.

4. Corrosion

instrument cluster connection

A short wiring harness or loose ground connection to the instrument cluster can prevent the instrument cluster from turning on. This may be the case, especially if you are experiencing intermittent cluster problems.

instrument cluster connection

The terminals where the wire harness plugs into the instrument cluster may develop corrosion. Remove the cluster and check. Inspect both the terminals on the instrument cluster but also the connector.

Cleaning the connections can bring the instrument cluster back to life if corrosion is present.

5. Headlight switch

instrument headlgiht switch

The headlight switch may be defective if your instrument cluster background lights don’t turn on or are too dim. Try setting the headlight switch to AUTO or ON to see if these two settings work.

Also, remember to turn up the instrument cluster brightness.

6. One gauge is not working.

mercedes gauge not working

If only one of the gauges does not work, the problem may not be the instrument cluster.

For example, if the fuel gauge does not work intermittently, the problem is typical with the fuel level-sending unit installed in the trunk instead of the instrument cluster.

If more than one gauge is not working, the problem may be a defective SAM unit.

(This post was last modified: 02-27-2022, 07:32 PM by hotfuzz1491.)

Can anyone please help me bring back my odometer reading. I was activating and deactivating menus in the Instrument Cluster using DTS Monaco.
I don’t know how my odometer went blank and flashing —— blank hashes. Car is 2016 Facelift A Class W176.

I’m still able to read the Odometer on the Left Hand Menu (Battery Voltage, VIN and Odometer mileage are still showing) in DTS Monaco when I’m connected.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

did you make a backup? restore it and that’s it

Update:

I’ve restored back up still not fixed.

I have locked the car up as well as disconnecting the battery…still not fixed.

A person has messaged me privately to help. Will update again when fixed.

Thank you all for the suggestions and the help so far
