Invalid dimm population ошибка

As I purchased this board secondhand, I’m not sure if this is an S2600CP2 or S2600CP4. There is a sticker that reads: PBA E99552-507 QSCP22002137

I have dual Xeon E5-2630L v2 CPUs, and I have 4 x 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 registered, ECC DIMMs on order.

While waiting for these DIMMs to arrive, I decided to test the board with some desktop DIMMs just to make sure that the board is in working order. My understanding is that this board will accept regular desktop DIMMs. According to the «Technical Product Specifications», this board is supposed to support UDIMMs. Unless, there’s such a thing as unregistered server DIMMs, I’m assuming «UDIMMs» is the same as typical desktop DIMMs.

First, I tried to a single 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 desktop DIMM and got the «Invalid DIMM population» on POST. My understanding is that a single DIMM configuration is supported. I tried this single DIMM in all 4 banks, and got this error each time.

Second, I tried various combinations of 4 x 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 desktop DIMMs. I’ve used these DIMMs singly, in pairs, and all 4 at a time. I’ve tried filling both slots of 2 channels as well as single slots of 4 channels. I’ve tried a single DIMM in all 4 banks, observing the «farthest fill first» rule.

Another thing to note is that although the «Invalid DIMM population» error appears on the display during POST, the LED POST progress code does not indicate this. According to the specifications, this error SHOULD BE indicated by:

Lower Nibble LEDs (lit green): # 0, # 2, # 3

Upper Nibble LEDs (lit amber): # 5, # 6, # 7

However, in MY CASE, the LEDs are lit as follows:

Lower Nibble LEDs (lit green): # 1, # 2, # 3

Upper Nibble LEDs (lit amber): # 5, # 6, # 7

I don’t even see this combination in the technical specifications.

Here is a video showing the POST progress LED sequence:

Hello everyone can someone please help me with my problem I have a motherboard (serverboard) Intel Server Board S1200BTS it has 4 channels and it support up to 32GB DDR3 RAM currently the RAM that was installed is DDR3 4G 1600 and it is working fine but we are planning to install 32G of RAM of DDR3 but when I try to add single 8G DDR3 1600 RAM I got this error message that seems new to me that I can even understand «invalid dimm population» can someone please explain to me how can make it 32GB of RAM working on my serverboard is there any combination of RAM like two(2) 8GB 1600 DDR3 and two(2) 8GB 1333 DDR3 to make it 32GB ? I was really confused guys it feels like there is right of combination RAM’s to make it work? any answers would be much appreciated thank in advance!

See if there is a BIOS update for the system. That error seems pretty straightforward, maybe you are not putting it in the correct slot.

Is it ECC memory? Did you check the datasheet for the motherboard about what RAM you can use with it?

  • #3

Hello yes I’ve already checked it based on mobo datasheet I can use ECC DDR3 RAM which is the one that I was using

Supermicro DIMM population error when swapping CPU

Hey Homelab!

I’m currently upgrading a server which has a Super X10DRL-i motherboard in it with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609V3 CPU. In this configuration, everything works just fine.

I’d like to upgrade the CPU to the Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3. According to the spec sheets for both the motherboard and the CPU, everything should work together (I’m 99% sure on this, but may have missed something). One thing to note is that the Xeon E5-2699 v3 that I am using is a sample CPU, not a retail one. When replacing the old CPU with the new one (all else kept the same) I get an error message on boot: «Incorrect memory DIMM population, check Memory Population Rule».

I’ve spent about 24 hours trying to figure this out. So far I have updated BIOS to the most recent version and I’ve tried playing around with the DIMM placement. All help and suggestions would be appreciated.
