Hello and welcome to the Advanced Installer Forums,
Since this is a JAVA installer package issue you should contact the JAVA support team regarding this issue.
However, there seems to be a problem with the previous version uninstallation. It seems that somehow some folders have invalid values in the upgrade process(«:»). You could try to manually uninstall the old version and then install the new version.
Regards,
Mihai

I have never Previously install Java, this a completely new install of it.
I tried to contact Java, but all they have is liveperson. «www.liveperson.com» http://www.liveperson.com/lp/java-help/?BanID=22489 which is absolutely useless, the tech people have no idea what i am saying.
I tried to fix it using this website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549, but all these registry items are ok.

Common AppData REG_EXPAND_SZ %ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application Data OK
Common Desktop REG_EXPAND_SZ %ALLUSERSPROFILE%Desktop OK

Common Start Menu REG_EXPAND_SZ %ALLUSERSPROFILE%Start menu OK
Common Startup REG_EXPAND_SZ %ALLUSERSPROFILE%Start MenuProgramsStartup OK

but the MSI errors give me an unknown location, could an Orca Editor fix this?

Try to update Java, Adobe Reader and now RIM Blackberry Desktop Manager, Error 1606 could not access network location.
I got this error for a few months. Initially, I came across it trying to update Java, Adobe Reader and now RIM Blackberry Desktop Manager.
The specific error is «Error 1606 could access the network location:.», with the colon and the dot at the end. Therefore, it is difficult to know exactly what registry entry, it’s.

Thanks in advance.
Hello
1. What microsoft fix it did you try?
2. don’t you make changes on the computer before the show?
This problem occurs because there is incorrect entries in the Shell folder of the user who is logged on to Microsoft Windows. When Windows Installer goes to the sale of Shell folder of the user who is logged on to the computer, Windows Installer cannot locate the correct entry.

Error 1606: Could not access network location % APPDATA%.
I am trying to install a game for Windows: Zoo Tycoon 2 Ultimate Collection (which is Zoo Tycoon 2 + 4 expansion packs), on a Vista Home SP2 machine. When you install disc 1, I almost immediately get the error above,Error 1606: could not access network location % APPDATA%. I looked at the error on this forum, who led me to the installation page for the installation package located manual download page offline at the: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/error_installshield.xml. When I tried to install the offline installation package, I got the same error, 1606. I don’t know what to do next? This game comes without a product key, this support won’t even take my call. Thank you-
This problem occurs because there is incorrect entries in the Shell folder of the user who is logged on to Microsoft Windows. When Windows Installer goes to the sale of Shell folder of the user who is logged on to the computer, Windows Installer cannot locate the correct entry. The solution is inhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/886549.
The steps to correct this problem involve editing the Windows registry. Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk. I suggest that you first back up your registry as follows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry.
Here are the steps to fix it.
1. click on start, run, typeregedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. look for the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell dossiers
3 remove the entries that show the path that is listed in the error message.
886549 KBhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/886549: Regedit open again. In the left pane, click User Shell Folders, point tonew, click expandable string value, type the value name that you want to restore (AppData) and then press ENTER. Right click on this value, clickchange, type the value in the value data for the value name box, and then clickOK. The value data must be: % USERPROFILE%AppDataRoaming.
Step 8 KB 886549 suggests that you also check the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders. However, by fixing my problem, I had not to change values in the registry key. If this does not work, follow ALL the steps in the referenced article.
Good luck. Lorien — MCSA/MCSE/network + / has + — if this post solves your problem, please click the ‘Mark as answer’ or ‘Useful’ button at the top of this message. Marking a post as answer, or relatively useful, you help others find the answer more quickly.
When trying to download or update msi programs and it’s got to the part of the installation, I get the Error 1606 could not access network location % APPDATA%. This only happens with programs of msi.
This only happens with programs of msi. I used the fixit for me solution and it does not solve my problem and I’m afraid to mess with the registry. What can I do now? I am running Vista Home Premium. I don’t know exactly what details you want. Just ask and I’ll try to provide answers.
Sorry to take so long to get back to you — but I have tried different things to try to solve my problem.
I was able to upgrade Silverlight without problem. But failed to update Adobe Reader or Java.
I ran the Microsoft fixit to resolve the Error 1606. These are the 50356 fixit. Microsoft help page says:
«This problem can occur if there is an incorrect setting in one of the following registry subkeys:»
-
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders»
It did not work. I went to the support page that you recommended and ran the fixit there — and who did not.
Then I noticed that this fixit 50356 mentions ‘current user’ — so I tried to change my standard account to an administrator account. It basically gave me two administrator accounts. (I already had a separate administrator account and was simply put the password so that it will prompt to update Java and Adobe.) Then I tried to update Adobe Reader by using the new administrator (officially a standard account) and had no problem! Then, of course, the problem has been to my administrator account.
I’m guessing that the Microsoft fixit didn’t work is because I was on the internet using my standard account, not my administrator account. So, it ‘fixed’ my standard account, that does not need fixing. I can’t connect to the internet using my administrator account, unless it is necessary.
It would be useful that the Microsoft help page has explained that the problem is probably in the administrator user account that is used to download and upgrade programs, that the fixit solution that they recommended would fix the problems only on that account, and I had to log on that account, connect to the internet and then running the fixit. But it doesn’t work. It just says: If you get the Error 1606, run this fixit.
I changed my new manager at standard and I’ll connect to my normal administrator account and run the fixit from here. If this is the problem with this account, I will be setting up a new administrator user account and delete it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to try to help me. People like me who do not know much about computers need people like you to help us!
Error 1606 annoys me! [Solved]
I did check Microsoft Live OneCare virus and noticed that there is malicious code in the Java folder. I wanted to reinstall Java together, but I have a problem, I can’t remove it. I used JavaRa to uninstall Java on my computer, but I still see it in remove a program window. JavaRe made it so that when I try to install, its is no longer asking me to remove the old version of Java. But I still get the same error message: «Error 1606. Could not access network location «. I tried to check:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
All seemed well, I restarted my computer and I’ve always had this problem. I am running Windows Vista 32 bit with Google Chrome.

Okay, I mark this as «resolved». I formatted my C drive. It was time to format this model, because it was really slow. Now the problem is gone, but his mystery yet what caused it
Java error 1606 is a big issue for millions of PC users, which generally shows when you’re trying to open a web page or use a piece of software that uses Java. We’ve found that although this error is very common, it’s continually leading your system to run much slower and with a lot of problems – which needs to be resolved in the most effective way by using the steps outlined on this page.
The errors you’re experiencing are generally going to be caused by the way in which Java will not be able to process the important settings required to help it run. We’ve found the most common issue for this error is that the “registry” directory of Windows will be damaged. In order to resolve this problem, you have to be able to repair any of the potential problems that not only this part of your computer may have, but also the part of your computer which will also be causing issues.
How To Fix Java Error 1606
The first step to fix this problem is to basically re-install Java. To do this, you should look to download a program called “JavaRA”, which is a free piece of software from the Internet that’s able to clean out any of the problems that your PC may have with Java. You can download this tool, install it and then let it get rid of any of the issues that Java may have, allowing your PC to run much smoother as a result. After that, restart your PC and install Java again. This will allow your system to access the files and settings it needs to run this piece of software, boosting the speed of your computer as a result.
We’ve found the next step is to then clean out a part of your PC called the “registry”. This is a large database which stores important information inside your system, and is continually being used to help make sure that your PC is able to load up the likes of your most recent emails, desktop icons and even your important settings that allows Windows to run smoothly. The 1606 error is actually caused in the most part by registry errors, and should be fixed by using a “registry cleaner” application to scan through your computer and repair any of the issues that it may have inside. We’ve found that using a program called Frontline Registry Cleaner 2.0 is the best at curing issues with this particular problem.
It looks like after doing multiple install and uninstall; I found non of JRE bundles are getting installed on the machine. After reboot; I could not reproduce this issue. I could reproduce this issue on XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit) both.
I am atatching snap shot of the error and install log both.
Please include the following information: (Chris G asked to put this infos in the bug)

Only once. After rebooting the machine it is not reproducible.
Was the Error 1606 always when going from 6u10 b32 to 6u11 b00, or other installs also?
