Are you using you’re GoPro as a webcam for an institutional and professional meeting? Is your computer suddenly not recognizing your Gopro and is it showing a “Camera Connection Error”?
To fix the issue you need to change the “internal graphics processor” from the camera app settings will fix the error easily.
So in this article, I will get you through the real reason behind this error and show you the process of how to fix the “Camera Connection Error” on Gopro Webcam.
Why Is “The Error” Happening?
If your computer fails to detect it, it shows the “Camera Connection Error”.
The main reason is not selecting the internal graphics processor for the camera.
The camera works with the Internal Graphics Processor. So if you use an Intel CPU the Integrated graphics processor will be the Intel UHD graphics. For AMD it’s Radeon Graphics.
Some of the other reasons could be:
- Your Antivirus Software is blocking your camera connection.
- The Camera Application is not properly installed
- You’re using an old GoPro
- Your camera firmware is not up to date
- You’re Windows 10 is not updated
- Faulty cable
Also, the virus in your system can cause such an error.
These are the easy steps to fix the camera connection error on Gopro:
Step 01:
Update your GoPro to the latest firmware.
To update you have to download and install the GoPro App on your mobile device. Keep your camera battery fully charged and pair the camera with GoPro App. Once both are paired follow the steps shown on the screen to update automatically.
The software download screen will look like this
During the update, your camera will turn on and off automatically. And after the update is completed the camera will return to normal.
In Desktop, you have to update the camera firmware manually. Check the procedures below:
- To update you will need a fully charged battery, Micro SD card, SD card adapter, and a computer.
- Get the serial number from the battery compartment or you can have the number from the camera’s “Preference” > “About” > “Camera info”.
- Go to gopro.com/update and register your camera with the serial number.
- Download the update. And whenever you check it will be the latest firmware update for the camera.
- Connect the micro SD card to your computer and extract the download file and transfer it to the SD card.
- Insert the SD card and fully charged battery into the camera.
- Turn on the camera and run the update.
To update your GoPro manually click on this link to have thorough instructions. Or watch this video.
Note: Make sure the SD card you use to update the camera is fully compatible with the GoPro. Otherwise, you might have trouble updating.
Step 02: Install “GoPro Webcam” on your PC
For both Mac and Windows users download the “Gopro webcam” app from here.
After installing, the Gopro Webcam icon will look like this.
Step 03: “Gopro Connect”
In your GoPro, go to “Connection Settings” > “USB Connection” > “Gopro Connect”.
Step 04:
Double click the “Gopro Webcam” icon and you will find an icon like this in the taskbar. Make sure you search in the hidden apps if you don’t find the “GoPro Webcam” Icon.
Step 04:
Take the battery out from your GoPro to prevent overheating. Then connect the GoPro via USB cable. And turn your camera ON.
An Error message like this may show up on your notification bar.
Or, you might find a green screen like this.
This means the app has selected the wrong graphics driver to connect to the computer screen.
Step 05:
A lot of us have to change the graphics processor to connect the GoPro with our computer system. Because it requires the Internal Graphics Processor as I mentioned earlier.
If the PC has an external Graphics card, it is pretty normal to have the connection error issue.
Because the external graphics processor is more powerful to use as the default graphics processor than the integrated ones.
Right-Click the “Webcam app” and select Graphics Processor.
And select “Intel UHD Graphics”
If you are using an AMD processor for your Desktop PC or Laptop you have to choose “Radeon Graphics”
If you’re a Mac user right-click the “Gopro Webcam” icon and select “Preferences” and select the “Intel UHD Graphics” if your Mac is using an Intel processor.
Step 06:
Open the “Gopro Webcam” and you will see a blue dot at the top right corner of the icon. This will indicate the Gopro has been connected successfully.
Step 07:
Click the “Gopro Webcam” and select preview. Then you should see your camera display on your screen. And you are using the GoPro as a webcam now.
If you still find trouble, restart your computer and open the app again.
Which GoPro Can Be Used As A Webcam?
GoPro’s latest flagship the Hero 10 is easily compatible with the webcam camera app.
Also, Hero 9, Hero 8, and Hero 7 can act as a webcam with the app. But you might find a hard time using the Hero 7 as a webcam. Because it has a slower processor and connection.
The “GoPro Webcam” Software makes these four-camera use as a webcam without any third-party software or any kind of extra hardware.
Conclusion
Thanks to modern technology, a GoPro Hero camera can use as a webcam. Who doesn’t want to stream and have video conferences in HD and wide-angle lenses, right? But many of us don’t know how to use it or what to do when it shows any kind of error.
I have tried to cover all the necessary and basic information regarding the connection error. The article directs you on how to fix the “Camera Connection Error” on the GoPro webcam and the main reason behind it.

The Issue
GoPro HERO10 and now the HERO9 has a critical software flaw that can «brick» the camera. We informed GoPro Inc. about this flaw in December. We got confirmation of receipt from them but it took until March to get any kind of traction.
It was poorly fixed, and now there is a new bug which is making the GoPro HERO9 unstable.
UPDATE: Should be fixed in latest releases. HERO10 v.1.42 , HERO9 v1.72
GoPro HERO10
If you connect more than six different devices to your GoPro HERO10, the camera will continuously resets on its own. Be warned, your friend who wirelessly downloads footage on to their phone using GoPro Quik counts towards this total. For this reason, skydivers are starting to see this bug a lot!
Be sure to reset your connections often.
GoPro HERO9
If you have multiple BLE connections and then upgrade your camera to v1.70 firmware, after 8 hours your camera will green screen then reboot. This is being called the GoPro Green Screen of Death. I believe this is the cause, but GoPro is absolutely horrible on letting their customers know what is the root cause of issues.
To prevent this error from occurring, be sure to reset your connections before updating to 1.70. This is difficult as most use their phone to update their camera.
GoPro HERO9 Fix: The factory_reset.txt portion of the HERO10 fix should be all you need to do to get your camera to work.
TLDR; Just put this factory_reset.txt file on your card and plug it into the camera. You may need to do this twice.
This is a ticking time bomb for GoPro.
It’s an easy fix for cameras that are fresh from the factory, but for us who actually use them, the process is extensive. This is also why I’m assuming GoPro Inc. hasn’t taken this issue seriously (up to this point April 2022). My guess is engineers are testing with sterile cameras, the same BLE device, or using the same sequence each time.
If you’re curious how the camera crashes when you’ve reach this limit, watch the following video.
Fortunately, the explained process will fix this endless loop. Unfortunately, there are many steps. For many of our cameras, updating or using the «factory_reset.txt» trick does not work.
Requirements
If you’re not proficient with computers, it may be helpful to ask your favorite computer guru for assistance. This is a fairly tedious process.
- You’ll need a card reader and a computer.
Smart devices may work but you’ll need a standard text editor like the following:
Mac: TextEdit
Win: Notepad
Linux: Whatever you want - Skills to Copy, Rename, and Modify text files
- Obviously this only works with the GoPro HERO10
Overview
(skip if you don’t care)
We first put the camera in a mostly factory reset state. This gets the timing correct so we can run our exploit. Unfortunately, the «factory_reset.txt» does not reset the necessary cache of Bluetooth addresses.
In order to run this script, we need the camera’s WiFi password. We determine this by extracting the camera’s logs & configuration. Once we have these files, we manually copy the password. From there, we modify the gpauto file which will kick off our script.
Preparation
- Using a card reader, extract the contents of the zip file directly onto your micro SDcard.
You should see the contents on the root of the card as above.
- Eject the card once you verify the contents.
Factory Reset
- Remove the battery from your GoPro HERO10.
- Place the card into the GoPro HERO10. Insert the battery. The camera will power on on it’s own.
- You should see the welcome GoPro «Splash Screen.» If not, start over.
- The camera will reset on it’s own. Let it sit for 15 seconds. If it no longer resets after the initial reset, congrats, you’re done.
Your camera is one of the lucky ones. You’ll have to set up your settings again, but at least your camera is no longer bricked.
- Otherwise, keep on following the instructions…
Check for log files
- Remove the battery and card from the camera.
- Using a card reader, place the card into your computer. In File Explorer/FileManager check to see if the following file exists.<CARD>MISClogslogs_00linuxfuse_bconf.json
(A slash designates a folder) - If it does, skip the next step and go to the «Extract Password from logs» step.
Create Logs
- Otherwise, place the card back into your camera, then the battery.
- Important: Do not power on right away. Wait about 6 seconds!!!!
- Press the mode (side button to power it on)
- Pull the battery right when the screen goes black.
- You can redo these steps if you get the sequence wrong.
Extract the Camera’s WiFi Password from the Logs
- Remove the card and insert it into your computer.
- Run Notepad(Windows) or TextEdit(Mac) and open the file <CARD>MISClogslogs_00linuxfuse_bconf.json
(A slash designates a folder) - If this file does not exist, redo the «Create Logs» steps. The 6 seconds wait after battery install is important.
- In the text file, find the heading «User Configuration» and item «passphrase»
- Copy the value. It is case sensitive and we do not want the quotes.
For instance,
«passphrase»: «ZBZ-cTX-tRH»,
We want to copy the value ZBZ-cTX-tRH
Modify gpauto
- Within Notepad or TextEdit open the file named ‘_gpauto’ on the card. You do not need to save conf.json if prompted.
Note: You may need to change the file extension to *.* to see all files. - Replace the value ‘Rep-lac-eMe’ with the value copied from the previous file ie. ‘ZBZ-cTX-tRH’.
- Save this file.
- Rename the file _gpauto to gpauto
- Many text editors put a .txt extension at the end of the file so be sure to rename it in the file manager versus saving the file in the editor.
- Now eject the card and place it in your camera.
Apply Patch
- Insert the battery, wait until you see the red light blink once then press the mode button on the side.
- You may hear a different beep than normal after a few seconds.
- It should now boot up as normal after a reset.
- If not:
1. Try this sequence over again.
2. Ensure the password matches exactly as within conf.json. I recommend using copy/paste within your text editor.

Support
Sorry, I can’t personally help out every one with support. If you contact GoPro Inc. you should be able to RMA your camera. My suggestion is to ask a friend to go through all the steps again. If that fails, contact GoPro for assistance.
I’m available for paid consulting if necessary but it will cost you more than a new camera. In other words, I am not GoPro Support and have no affiliation with them. In fact…

Nothing can be more frustrating than getting the rare opportunity to capture that perfect shot or video clip, only to have your GoPro camera freeze up on you. There are multiple reasons which can cause your GoPro camera to behave this way and we’ll discuss each cause and solution in detail here, so keep reading.
A GoPro camera can freeze due to any of the following 5 reasons:
- Outdated firmware
- Incorrect SD card
- Dislodged SD Card
- Dislodged/Faulty battery
- Camera needs a reset
Now let’s look at a few troubleshooting steps and solutions in more detail. Before you continue, make sure you’ve switched off all the camera connections i.e. Wi-Fi, GPS, Voice Control, and that you’ve removed any BacPac accessories.
Let’s get into it!
The following 5 problems and solutions are listed in order of most common to least likely, however, all these issues have been reported to cause GoPro cameras of various models to freeze up.
SOLUTION #1 – Incorrect SD Card
Right, let’s inspect the SD card. If your camera freezes unexpectedly, try removing the SD card and reinserting it, or replace with a different card. Make sure you are using an SD card of the correct specification and speed as specified by GoPro. You can access the list of recommended cards here.
Try removing the SD card and then turning the camera on and check if it still freezes. If, after removing the card the camera behaves, then obviously the problem most likely stems from the card. Always ensure you format your SD card before use.
(NOTE: Reformatting the SD card will delete all data off of the card, so be sure that you save any videos or pictures you want to keep on your computer before reformatting the SD card.)
SOLUTION #2 – Outdated Firmware
The 2nd most likely cause of a freezing GoPro is outdated firmware. The Manual Update procedure is the most reliable/recommended method to do a firmware update and you can view that manual process in more detail here. By reinstalling the cameras software can correct any potential errors with the current software, so it’s a worthwhile exercise.
If you are 100% sure the firmware is not the problem and you are on the latest version, then try the next solution, which could be the culprit.
SOLUTION #3 – Dislodged SD Card
GoPro’s are after all action cameras, which means they are designed to be used in extreme sports and mounted to all possible weird and wonderful places, which puts them at risk of taking a few heavy knocks and falls along the way. The camera might have taken a heavy knock or fall which resulted in the SD card becoming slightly dislodged.
Try removing the SD card and then turning the camera on to check if it still freezes. If, after removing the card the camera behaves, then obviously the problem most likely stems from the card. Make sure the SD card is seated securely in the micro SD slot.
SOLUTION #4 – Dislodged/Faulty Battery
A dislodged or faulty battery can also cause your GoPro to become unresponsive. If the battery is old and you are attempting to shoot high quality, long length videos, this places enormous strain on the battery to deliver the required juice, causing it to spaz out. Check your cameras battery age and health.
SOLUTION #5 – Overheating
External operating temperatures (35+ degrees) are a major cause of overheating GoPro’s. This should probably listed higher up on this list, since it’s a very common occurrence. Just like any electronic device, if it’s operated for extended periods in high humidity and exposed to high external temperatures, you’re likely to experience a few electronic glitches including freezing along the way. Keep your camera cool and shoot shorter videos, especially if you’re using high frame rates and high resolution settings.
What GoPro Users Say
My brand new go pro hero 7 white keeps freezing! I am starting to loose my patience with this now especially as it isn’t cheap! Every time I turn it on within minutes it freezes and turns it self off. The same thing happens when I try and connect to the app I have about 5 seconds before it freezes turns itself off again. I have looked at other forums and i have done all the steps I believe but nothing! Please help, starting to regret buying this thing now!!!!

I am using my Hero 7 for underwater video and photography, but mainly video. I have updated the camera with the latest firmware, but still it freezes after 5-10 minutes underwater. Once it freezes, forget about it. I cannot open the housing at the depth of 30 – 40 meters. The only way to come to life, is when I come up on the surface, and I remove and re-insert the battery back. What I have noticed is that whenever I re-indert the battery, it seems that there ia 30% of the battery life left. I do not know if this is a coincidence.

How Do I Stop My GoPro From Freezing?
Keeping your camera operating at optimal performance is possible by following a few rules.
- Make sure you are always on the latest firmware update
- Always format your SD card before use
- Use one of the recommended SD Cards
- Shoot shorter videos, where possible.
- Reduce prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
- Reduce video quality and capture load where possible
- Allow the camera to breath better by creating some airflow where possible.

Conclusion
To be honest, I find it rather unsatisfactory for a camera of this price and hype to underperform so easily. Being marketed as the rugged, robust, be all and end all action camera that’s meant to capture those once off extreme and unique opportunities, I find it rather finicky and sensitive to many external factors, in environments it’s been designed to thrive in. perhaps you’ll only have one opportunity to nail the shot, and the GoPro lets you down. I still love my GoPro but dang they need to up their game to justify that premium price tag.
