Finder Error 100093 when using drag and drop to transfer a micro:bit .hex file

Alert for MacOS 13 Ventura users only:
Any user attempting to use the drag and drop option to transfer a micro:bit .hex file using the Finder application on the newly released macOS 13 Ventura (release date 22 October 2022) will see the following error appear:
“The operation cannot be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100093).»
This issue affects both micro:bit V1 and micro:bit V2.
Apple has also been made aware of the situation.
Solution
Programming the micro:bit with web USB still works as normal and is the recommended approach for users on all operating systems. Read about using web USB in the micro:bit guide.
If you have .hex files on your computer that you would like to program to the micro:bit you can drag and drop them into the relevant editor (MakeCode or Python) and use web USB to flash them.
If your .hex files were not created with these two online editors, you can use a web USB flashing tool we have published.
Workaround for users who cannot use web USB
Until Apple release a fix for this, we suggest you use the following workaround to the problem using the built-in application called Terminal.
Terminal can be found via the Launchpad or Finder:
- Click the Launchpad icon, click on the Utilities Folder, then click Terminal.
- Or in the Finder, open the /Applications/Utilities folder, then double-click on Terminal.

Basic use and rules of Terminal
The terminal application has many built in commands, some of these may not be familiar to you and you should only need to a single command (rsync) to achieve the goal of transferring the .hex file to the micro:bit. However, be aware that every character you type matters, especially spaces.
While it is normal to use the ‘cp’ command for this sort of operation, in macOS 13, this also does not work properly for programming the micro:bit, and can result in an error 504 on the micro:bit display.
Instead, we will use rsync
- rsync – a powerful copy command to enable your .hex file to be transferred to the micro:bit
To run a command, just type it in at the cursor and hit return to execute the command.
For example
type the following command replacing the name microbit-smile.hex with the name of your micro:bit .hex file.
rsync ~/Downloads/microbit-smile.hex /Volumes/MICROBIT/
The orange LED on the back of your micro:bit should blink and after about 20 seconds, your program should run.
In macOS you can also drag files from Finder or the desktop into the terminal window instead of typing their full path.

Some Mac users running macOS Ventura have noticed a series of “operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred” error messages when attempting to drag and drop files in the Finder from macOS Ventura to a virtual volume, like what’s often used on a Micro:bit, Raspberry Pi Pico, AdaFruit, CircuitPython / Pyboard, DAPLink, or other RP2040-based boards, and even some USB flash drives.
The full error message when attempting to drag and drop UF2 or hex files in the Finder to the target volume is usually “The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100093).” with the same 100093 error code.
A workaround is available for Raspberry Pi Pico users however, and it relies on using the command line cp command to copy files manually through Terminal.
Use the following command syntax to copy the file blink.uf2 to the Raspberry Pi volume (if your file or volume is named differently, replace that syntax accordingly:
cp -X blink.uf2 /Volumes/RPI-RP2/
Because copying files in Terminal works, this implies the problem lies in the Finder of MacOS Ventura, and is likely a bug that will be resolved in a future macOS system software update.
If using the command line is annoying for you or not possible for your situation, and you’re a heavy Raspberry Pi Pico or Micro:bit user, you may want to consider avoiding macOS Ventura for the time being.
Raspberry Pi offers the following additional information and speculation as to the cause of the issue:
If you plug a Raspberry Pi Pico, or other RP2040-based board, into a Mac running Ventura, the RPI-RP2 “virtual” volume will be mounted as normal. Unfortunately, if you then try to drag-and-drop a UF2 file onto the volume, the process doesn’t complete, throwing a kPOSIXErrorENOATTR (“Attribute not found”) error.
Why is this happening? Our current assumption is that Apple has implemented a change in the way that the macOS Finder deals with extended attributes.
FWIW, rsync and pcp also work at the command line for this purpose as well.
So if you’re using a Raspberry Pi and having issues with macOS Ventura, and you’re seeing that annoying “The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100093)” error message, turn to the command line for now, and you’ll be on your way.
You’re not alone if you’re reading this.
You’ve installed macOS Ventura and can’t copy files to a select device or drive you own via macOS Ventura Finder.
Yes, copying files to select external devices/drives may result in «Operation can’t be completed unexpected error 100093». After two hours of speaking with Apple Customer Service regarding the issue, I was escalated to a Senior Advisor to help troubleshoot the issue. After two hours with the nicest Senior Advisor at Apple, there wasn’t a resolution. The Advisor was just as surprised as my team and promised to escalate to the developers; however, Advisors are not allowed to provide follow-ups.
Please know that the copying issue isn’t tied to just HEX or BIN files, as stated online. The advisor and I tried copying over simple text (txt) files to an external HD and experienced the same issue. Note that for our team, this is an internal dummy drive inside of a product that receives firmware updates for performance enhancements.
After a thorough read of multiple articles and extensive testing by the Advisor and myself, we’ve concluded the following:
- when a file is copied from a Mac to select external drives, Finder appears to add attributes to the file before the transfer.
- Finder does NOT appear to add these identifiers to the original file.
- therefore, when the file that was copied over to the external device is compared to the original file, they’re no longer identical due to the additional attributes added to the copied file.
- Error.
