This error occurs due to problems with a custom game. It can come with the error message “match.custom key not_supported.401”, or even “Custom matchmaking key is not supported”. The reasons behind this problem for this Fortnite matchmaking error for custom games can vary:
- There’s an issue with your Fortnite game or device trying to access the custom game code, so you’re getting hit with Error Code 401
- The match-making region doesn’t match with the players that are trying to join your custom game

Do note that to create a custom game and not hit a Fortnite matchmaking error for custom games, you must have an Epic Games creator code first. You can obtain this here but do remember there are rules for obtaining a creator code, the most notable one being you need to be a content creator and have at least +1000 subs/followers on social media. If you don’t, then you won’t even be able to create a custom game in Fortnite. Restart Fortnite and Device

To fully restart your Fortnite, quit the game, right-click the Taskbar below and select Task Manager. Then select the Processes tab on the Task Manager above and locate any Fortnite apps. Once you find them, select them and click on End Task.

Fortnite has a feature called custom matchmaking, which was introduced some time ago. It is a feature that makes it easy for people to get into the same game/lobby in Fortnite Battle Royale. Without a custom matchmaking key, it is random who you are queued up with when you start a game of Battle Royale.
Custom matchmaking is intended for streamers, content creators and competitive players. Streamers can use it to have fun with viewers, while competitive players can practice in the same game and server.
In the beginning, custom matchmaking was only used for larger tournaments that were officially affiliated with EPIC Games and Fortnite. Then later, a select group of people from the support-a-creator program got access, and later more people from the support-a-creator program were accepted.
Competitive players now entirely use custom keys for scrims and practice games. Whereas earlier, they had to try to get into the same games while doing scrims in Fortnite by queuing up at the same time.

How to get access to custom matchmaking keys and custom games
Please note that the requirements might be subject to changes in the future. The requirements listed here are the information we currently have. In the future and we will try to stay updated and update the page as soon as we hear about any changes.
The requirements are fairly simple:
- Be an accepted creator with a support-a-creator code (EPIC games affiliate program).
- Have at least 100 people using your support-a-creator code.
So let’s go a little more in-depth with the requirements.
How to become part of the support-a-creator program
The official website, states that the following are eligible to participate in the support-a-creator program:
Creators (active video makers, streamers, storytellers, artists, cosplayers, musicians, and community builders) who meet the criteria below.
- Has more than 1,000 followers on at least one major social platform (for example Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, Facebook, Mixer, etc.).
- Completes the Affiliate Agreement and abides by the Creator Code of Conduct.
- Is capable of receiving payment in a form that Epic supports (among others they support PayPal).
If you are accepted into the creator program, you will receive a support-a-creator code (SAC code).
This can be used to create affiliate links for various games, but specifically for Fortnite, people can also put in your creator code in the Fortnite item shop. Creators will then receive 5$ every time someone spends 10,000 V-bucks in-game with the code.

Previously you had to have a minimum amount of people using your code to get accepted to start custom games. Back then the magic number of people using your code, was around 100 people.
You can follow your supporters and earnings via the affiliate dashboard. Please note that EPIC Games strictly forbid anyone to talk about how much they earned through the creator program.
How to use custom matchmaking keys
You have been lucky enough to be accepted into the support-a-creator program, and people are now using your code. If you have not already received an email about you got access to custom matchmaking, try to send EPIC games a support ticket and ask them for access.
If you want to start a custom matchmaking, you need to click on game mode and then “Custom Options” in the lower right corner of the screen. You can then fill in a code you decide on and start the game. This will open up the queue.
Everyone else can join the game in the same way you create the game, by going to “Custom Options” and type in the same code. When there are enough people, the custom host clicks on “Start Game” and everyone will be put into the same server lobby.
To get into the same game, make sure that you have the same options as the custom host.
- You have selected the same server region in the in-game settings (Examples of regions are EU, NA East, NA West, Oceania, Brazil, Asia).
- You have selected the correct game mode (Solo, Duo, Squad, Arena Solo, Arena Duo, or an LTM mode).
- That you have typed in the same custom matchmaking key.

Код ошибки 401 – что это?
Коды состояния HTTP 400 возникают в случае проблем с выполнением запросов. В частности, ошибка 401 появляется, когда браузер отказывает вам в доступе к странице, которую вы хотите посетить.
В результате вместо загрузки страниц браузер выведет сообщение об ошибке. Ошибки 401 могут возникать в любом браузере, потому отображаемое сообщение может варьироваться.
К примеру, в Chrome и Edge вы, скорее всего, увидите иконку бумаги с простым сообщением о том, что запрашиваемая страница не отвечает. Вы увидите фразу «HTTP Error 401». Вам будет предложено связаться с владельцем сайта, если ошибка не пропадет:

Несовместимые плагины
Также бывают ситуации, когда ошибка вызвана несовместимостью плагинов или какими-либо сбоями в них. К примеру, плагин безопасности может ошибочно принять вашу попытку входа за вредоносную активность, а потому будет возвращена ошибка 401 для защиты страницы.
Неверный URL или устаревшая ссылка

Как исправить ошибку 401 (5 методов)
Теперь, когда мы разобрались с причинами ошибки 401, пришло время обсудить, как ее устранить.
Давайте рассмотрим 5 методов, которые вы можете использовать.
- Проверьте ваш URL.
Начнем с самого простого потенциального решения: убедитесь, что вы использовали верный URL. Это может выглядеть банально, но 401 ошибки нередко появляются, если URL-адрес был введен неправильно.

Кэш браузера предназначен для улучшения процесса взаимодействия с сайтами в сети за счет сокращения времени загрузки страниц. К сожалению, иногда это может вести к нежелательным последствиям.
Как мы уже говорили выше, одной из распространенных причин появления ошибки 401 являются устаревшие или неправильные данные кэша или cookies. Потому, если URL введен верно, следующий шаг – чистка кэша браузера.
В итоге вы удалите любую недействительную информацию, которая хранится локально в вашем браузере и может приводить к прерываниям процесса аутентификации. Аналогично, файлы cookie вашего браузера могут содержать аутентификационные данные, которые нужно обновить.
Если вы пользуетесь Chrome, вам нужно щелкнуть по иконке с меню в правом верхнем углу браузера и выбрать пункт Settings. В разделе «Privacy and security» нажмите «Clear browsing data:»
Далее вводим URL требуемого сайта и очищаем для него данные.
В других браузерах процесс очистки кэша и cookie может отличаться. К примеру, в Firefox нужно щелкать по иконке с библиотекой и выбирать History > Clear Recent History:

- Очистка DNS.
Еще один метод, который вы можете попробовать для устранения ошибки 401 – это очистка DNS. Эта причина встречается относительно редко, но стоит попробовать и такой подход, особенно если первые два ничего не дали.
Чтобы очистить DNS, перейдите в Windows к меню «Пуск» и там уже введите в строку поиска cmd. Нажмите Enter. Откроется командная строка. Далее вставьте команду ipconfig/flushdns, после чего снова нажмите Enter.
Если вы пользуетесь Mac, вы можете открыть командную строку следующим образом: Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.

Проблема может возникать и по вине плагинов.

Как мы уже писали ранее, ответ 401 передается через заголовок WWW-Authenticate, который отображается как “WWW-Authenticate: <type> realm=<realm>”. Он включает в себя строки данных, указывающие на то, какой тип аутентификации требуется для предоставления доступа.
Вам нужно посмотреть, был ли отправлен ответ в WWW-Authenticate, а точнее какая схема аутентификации была использована. По крайней мере, это позволит вам приблизиться на один шаг к решению.
Перейдите на страницу с ошибкой 401 и откройте консоль разработчика в Chrome. Вы можете щелкнуть правой кнопкой мыши на странице и выбрать Inspect (Ctrl+Shift+J).
Далее перейдите на вкладку Network и перезагрузите страницу. Это позволит сгенерировать список ресурсов. Выберите заголовок Status, чтобы отсортировать таблицу, и найдите код 401:
