Whenever I try to connect to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n Gigabit) or AirPort Express (802.11n) through AirPort Utility 5.4.1, I get this error:

«An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.

Error 10057″

I have rebooted my computer, the AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, disabled ESET Smart Security firewall, connected through WiFi and Ethernet, and every time has the same result.

WiFi is configured to use WPA2-AES (TKIP doesn’t work) and I just can’t figure this out for the life of me!

Error 10057 when connecting

The times they are a-changin’.

This post seems to be older than 14 years—a long time on the internet. It might be outdated.

I was recently having an issue with my Airport Express. I was trying to set it up so that I could play music through it. I got it to join my network, but I couldn’t connect to it in iTunes. When I went to go reconfigure it, I found that I also couldn’t connect to it…even though I could see it. I kept getting an error message:

An error occured while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error 10057

The problem turned out to be a subtle configuration setting with my WiFi. My network is set for WPA with TKIP encryption. However, it appears that Airport Express doesn’t really like to play well with TKIP. Switching the encryption to WPA with TKIP and AES (also called TKIP+AES) fixed the issues. Presumably, setting the network encryption to WPA with AES would also work.

I tried confirming my findings, however I wasn’t able to find anything in the manual or tech specs.

Hopefully, this post helps someone else with a similar problem.

Airport configuration error 10057 and…

I was having the same persistent problem accessing my Airport Extreme router at my office using my HP Windows XP machine (one of my last non-Apple computers).  It kept returning the 10057 error when I would use the Windows-based Airport Utility.  However, I could always access via my Macs using Airport Utility.  I was reminded via another thread in these communities that sometimes you must refresh Windows’ TCP/IP settings.  However, that response didn’t include a link to the following Microsoft Support knowledgebase article that instructs you how to do so and also includes a downloadable application called «Microsoft Fix it 50199» that will run the scripts for you and should resolve this common error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 Another thread also suggested the work-around of using File > Configure Other, which does work when you encounter this error.  You can then manually access the desired router.  That does not resolve the issue, though. I also thought that the error might be related to my use of Apple’s Wireless Distribution System (WDS) to connect my Airport Extreme with a remote Airport Express.  However, this problem is obviously not an Apple issue but a basic Microsoft one: corrupt TCP/IP settings.  I hope that this helps and saves others some time. Kind regards, Jason HavensDestin, FL, USA

Bought a new router (net connection was dropping for a second a few times a day) and replaced it with a Belkin N Wireless Router.  All hard wired computers were back online pretty quick.

The Airport Express that I use to play music in the office did NOT connect though.  When I tried to configure it I would get this:

An error occured while trying to access the Apple wireless device.  Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.  Error 10057

After trying MANY things I flipped my router from “802.11b & 802.11g & 802.11n” to “802.11g” the Airport Express now works.  I don’t know what this does to my range/speed for devices that are able to talk 802.11n.

The bigger problem is the long network cable that no longer works… zero changes to that end of things but connecting a computer directly to the other end fails to work.  Little choice but replacing the entire cable, about 20ft long… through the basement… through a hub.

I hate networking – but not as much as I hate printers.

Few things give me as much joy as playing the piano while my children dance.
