Message: Service could not contact domain controller to access configuration objects

Summary

The DFS Replication service failed to contact a domain controller to access configuration information. The service will try again during the next configuration polling cycle. This event can be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain
Services, or DNS issues.

Causes

DFS Replication failed to contact a domain controller to retrieve configuration information. If replication was working previously, the service will use cached configuration stored locally but will not respond to any configuration changes until the issue
is resolved.
This issue can be caused by the following factors:

  • Basic network connectivity issues
  • Firewall settings
  • Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) issues

Resolutions

  • Test basic network connectivity
  • Check Firewall settings

Test basic network connectivity

To test network connectivity with the affected server, use the following procedure:

  1. Open a command prompt window and then use the ping command to check basic network connectivity.

If the ping command fails, it is likely that the server is not running, or has network problems that require local access to resolve. If ping is blocked in your network environment, skip this step.
  2. If the ping command is successful, test the server’s registration in DNS by using the
    nslookup command.
If the nslookup command fails, there is a problem with DNS. Check the DNS server health or contact the DNS server administrator.
  3. If the nslookup command succeeds, DNS is working properly.

Note: For more information about troubleshooting network issues, see
article 325487 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=46059).

Check Firewall settings

If a firewall has been configured between replication partners, ensure that it is not blocking RPC communication. DFS Replication depends on RPC for communication. DFS Replication uses the RPC Endpoint Mapper (port 135) and a randomly assigned
dynamic port in the range of 49152 through 65535 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008, or in the range of 1025 through 5000 for Windows Server 2003 R2.

You can use the Dfsrdiag command-line tool to specify a static port instead of the dynamic port. For more information about how to specify the RPC Endpoint Mapper, see
article 154596 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=73991). For more information about dynamic port usage in Windows Server 2008, see
article 929851 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=187092).

Verification

To test DFS Replication’s ability to communicate with AD DS, open a command prompt window and then type the following command:
Dfsrdiag pollad /verbose. The command should report Operation Succeeded. If not, there is a problem communicating with AD DS.

  • Question

  • I have seen this error since the inception of this stand alone AD PDC instance of Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials. I understand that Essentials does not support other Domain Controllers ; Member servers ; or trust between Domains of any kind. I also
understand that DSF Replication is a service that replicates files between other servers and other domain servers that Essentials dose not want to talk to.

So my question is why am I seeing this DFSR error 1202  in my event log, if Essentials does not support communication to other servers and domain servers? Maybe a better question is why does Essentials even try to implement this
service? Do I even need to try to resolve this issue or should I just disable it and move on?

    Test basic network connectivity

    ping works

    nslookup works.

    Therefore, DNS is Ok.

The check Firewall settings was vague:“ensure that it is not blocking RPC communication. DFS Replication depends on RPC for communication. DFS Replication
uses the RPC Endpoint Mapper (port 135) and a randomly assigned dynamic port in the range of 49152 through 65535 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008, or in the range of 1025 through 5000 for Windows Server 2003 R2.
    ” However, there was
no specifics on how to check.

Both servers have static IP addresses so it is not necessary to specify static address.

I do not think the Windows Defender Firewall would be blocking.
     I skipped to verification

When I tried to Dfsrdiag pollad /verbose, Windows Server 2016 says that is not a valid command.

    dfsrdiag PollAD /verbose

‘dfsrdiag’ is not recognized as an internal or external command,

  • I will wait and see if this error shows again.

  • Sounds good, if / when it does it will likely be because of the 5002 where all the dynamic RPC ports are consumed.

  • Question

  • I have set up a replication group and folder between two 2012R2 servers.  Replication works fine until I reboot one of them.  Then I get Error 1202  in the Events log with this message:

The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can be caused
by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues.

    Additional Information:
Error: 160 (One or more arguments are not correct.)

I cannot tell which argument is not correct.

I am also puzzled why I was able to set up the replication initially, and it works fine, if the two systems can’t talk to the domain controller.

I am not sure there is a shutdown timeout and that I am falling in to the ‘Dirty shutdown’ scenario because I can’t find the events 1006 or 1008 indicating DFS stopping/stopped events.  This is Windows Server 2012, so the hotfix for 2008 to change the
DFS recovery should be applied.  And, this is NOT a very active folder so, I expect there is nothing replicating at the time I issue a reboot.

And, when I try the wmic command to resume replication I get an error.

And, I get these messages after reboot.

  • Hi,

Based on my knowledge, in general, after reboot dfs server, the server will contact the DC to find the dfs database and it should establish the dfs replication with other dfs servers again.

In your scenario, it seems blocked after reboot. Now you have already disable firewall, it shouldn’t be blocked then.

I’m afraid for dedicated Support about such performance analysis you might need to contact  Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS).

I ran across an interesting issue I wanted to share.  I had a customer that recently had a migration performed.  Previously he was running SBS (Small Business Server) 2011 and is now running Windows Server Essentials 2016.  After demoting and removing the SBS 2011 server, he started receiving the following error on every boot.

1202 DFSR

The error is quickly followed by an informational message indicating that DFSR (Domain File System Replication) successfully connected to a domain controller.

Based on my previous experience with similar issues I posited that the problem was due to the DFSR service starting before either the network stack was fully initialized or before the DNS (Domain Name System) service was running.

I explained that based on the behavior this could safely be ignored.  This did not go over very well as the error also shows up in the Windows Essentials health report.  This brings us to the solution.  And this solution will work for just about any service that needs a little more time at boot.  We set the startup type for the DFSR service to Automatic (Delayed Start).  We restarted the server and this eliminated the 1202 error.

I hope that you found this article informative.  If you have anything to add, please feel free to leave a comment below.

On a Windows 2016 Server Standard, single server, which also functions as the domain controller for a small office, upon each restart I get Event ID 1202 shown below

«The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues.

Additional Information:
Error: 160 (One or more arguments are not correct.)»

While searching for solutions or tips on this Event ID, I saw an advice on running the following command: Dfsrdiag pollad /verbose. When I run the command, I get the expected result —Operation Succeeded — see attached screenshot. This error happens upon each reboot. It clearly says that the service will run again in 60 minutes. The error doesn’t come back in 60 minutes, so apparently there is no issue. Does anyone have an explanation why do these errors come up upon reboot on a single domain server?

Thank you.

Доброго времени суток! Как узнать какой тип репликации используется в домене DFS или NTFRS ?
В журналах домен контроллера есть и такие события
Источник DFSR event id 1202

Repadmin /syncall /force /APed

Убедится что репликация работает имеется множество способов один из которых:
Active Directory Replication Status Tool

repadmin /showrepl

Проверяем состояние sysvol

Dcdiag /e /test:sysvolcheck /test:advertising

Проверим состояние службы DFS, выполнив команды:

dfsrmig /getGlobalState

dfsrmig /getmigrationstate

Начало миграции.

1. Установим флаг подготовки к миграции (global state:
Prepared), выполнив команду:
dfsrmig /setGlobalState 1

dfsrmig /setGlobalState 2 2. Убедимся, что все контроллеры домена находятся в статусе Redirected:
dfsrmig /getmigrationstate

Удаляем каталог SYSVOL Примечание! Процесс удаления («Eliminated«) не может быть отменен!
Прежде чем перейди в режим Elminated, необходимо убедиться что:

  • Все контроллеры домена находятся в статусе Redirected
  • Шара SYSVOL все еще доступна

1. Набираем команду:
dfsrmig /setGlobalState 3
2. Проверяем статус командой:
dfsrmig /getmigrationstate
В результате каталог SYSVOL будет мигрирован в папку SYSVOL_DFSR. Теперь для репликации SYSVOL применяется механизм DFS.

  • DFS Replication failed to contact Domain Controller…..

I have seen this error since the inception of this stand alone AD PDC instance of Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials.

    Hi,
Did you mean that you did not configure a DFS server in the new DC but you get the DFSR error 1202 in your event log? Then the issue is not related to the existing SBS domain.
Please try to turn off the Windows Firewall to check if it causes the issue. You could also refer to the articles below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • DFSR failed to contact domain controller

Im having an odd problem with DFSR group we created to replicate web content between two of our web servers.
In event viewer we have this event 1202 for DFSR.
«The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can
be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues.
    Additional Information:
Error: 160 (One or more arguments are not correct.)»
In the DFSR logs I see this.

    When I run «dfsrdiag pollad»:
[ERROR] PollDsNow method executed unsuccessfully. ReturnValue: 12 (0xc)
[ERROR] Failed to execute PollAD command Err: -2147217407 (0x80041001)
However I can run «dfsrdiag dumpadcfg» and it outputs everything fine.
We don’t have any other problems with AD.  It seems like this started after we installed KB2467173 & KB2538242.  We are going to uninstall those and see if it works.

I can successfully run «dfsrdiag.exe dumpadcfg» and it outputs the entire config.  Why does «dfsrdiag pollad» fail then if the config can be read.
Why did it work before I rebooted the server?  In both cases it broke after rebooting.
    PS C:Windowssystem32> dfsrdiag dumpadcfg

  • Event ID: 5014, 5004 The DFS Replication Service is stopping communication with partner / Error 1726 (The remote procedure call failed.)

I’m replicating between two servers in two sites (Server A — Server 2012 R2 STD, Server B — Server 2008 R2) over a VPN (Sonicwall Firewall).  Though the initial replication seems to be
happening it is very slow (the folder in question is less than 3GB).  I’m seeing these in the event viewer every few minutes:
The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner PPIFTC for replication group FTC due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.
    Additional Information:
Error: 1726 (The remote procedure call failed.)
    and then….
The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner PPIFTC for replication group FTC.
Here are all my troubleshooting steps (keep in mind that our VPN is going through a SonicWall <—I increased the TCP timeout to 24 hours):
-Increased TCP Timeout to 24 hours
-Added the following values on both sending and receiving members and rebooted server

    —————————————more troubleshooting——————————
I’ve done a lot of research on the Internet and most of it is pointing to the same stuff I’ve tried.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Maybe I need to look somewhere
else on the server side or firewall side?
I tried replicating from a 2012 R2 server to another 2012 server and am getting the same events in the event log so maybe it’s not a server issue.
    Some other things I’m wondering:
-Could it be the speed of the NICs?  Server A is a 2012 Server that has Hyper-V installed.  NIC teaming was initially setup and since Hyper-V is installed the NIC is a «vEthernet
(Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver Virtual Switch) running at a speed of 10.0Gbps whereas Server B is running a single NIC at 1.0Gbps
-Could occasional ping timeout’s cause the issue?  From time to time I get a timeout but it’s not as often as the events I’m seeing.  I’m getting 53ms pings.  The folder
is only 3 GB so it shouldn’t take that long to replicate but it’s been days.  The schedule I have set for replication is mostly all day except for our backup times which start at 11pm-5am.  Throughout the rest of the time I have it set anywhere from
    4Mbps to 64 Kbps.  Server A is on a 5mb circuit and Server B is on a 10mb circuit.

I’m seeing the same errors, all servers are running 2008 R2 x64. Across multiple sites, VPN is steady and reliably.
    185 events from 12:28:21 to 12:49:25
Events are for all five servers (one per office, five total offices, no two in the same city, across three states).
Events are not limited to one replication group. I have quite a few replication groups, so I don’t know for sure but I’m running under the reasonable assumption that none are spared.
Reminder from original post (and also, yes, same for me), the error is: Error: 1726 (The remote procedure call failed.)
Some way to figure out what code triggers an Event ID 5014, and what code therein specifies an Error 1726, would extremely helpful. Trying random command line/registry changes on live servers is exceptionally unappealing.
Side note, 1726 is referenced here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/976442?wa=wsignin1.0
But it says, «This RPC connection problem may be caused by an unstable WAN connection.» I don’t believe this is the case for my system.
    It also says…
For most RPC connection problems, the DFS Replication service will try to obtain the files again without logging a warning or an error in the DFS Replication log. You can capture the network trace to determine whether the cause of the problem is at the network
layer. To examine the TCP ports that the DFS Replication service is using on replication partners, run the following command in a
    Command Prompt window:
    NETSTAT –ANOBP TCP
This returns all open TCP connections. The connections in question are «DFSRs.exe», which the command won’t let you filter for.
Instead, I used the NETSTAT command as advertised, dumping output to info.txt:
    NETSTAT -ANOBP TCP >> X:info.txt
Then I opened Excel and manually opened the .TXT for the open wizard. I chose fixed-width fields based on the first row for each result, and then added a column:
    =IF(A3=»Can not», «Can not obtain ownership information», IF(LEFT(A3,1) = «[«, A3&B3&C3, «»))
Dragging this down through the entire file let me see that row (Row F) as the file name. Some anomalies were present but none impacted DFSrs.exe results.
Finally, you can sort/filter (I sorted because I like being able to see everything, should I choose to) to get just the results you need, with the partial rows removed from the result set, or bumped to the end.
My server had 125 connections open.
That is a staggering number of connections to review, and I feel like I’m looking for a needle in a haystack.
I’ll see if I can find anything useful out, but a better solution would be most wonderful.

  • The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:WindowsSYSVOLdomain

    Hi,
i am facing the problem SVSVOL folder replication, i also checked dcdiag and result is DFSRevent fail .
in event log i found the event Error:
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:WindowsSYSVOLdomain. This server has been disconnected from other partners for 173 days, which is longer than the time allowed by the MaxOfflineTimeInDays parameter
(61). DFS Replication considers the data in this folder to be stale, and this server will not replicate the folder until this error is corrected.
To resume replication of this folder, use the DFS Management snap-in to remove this server from the replication group, and then add it back to the group. This causes the server to perform an initial synchronization task, which replaces the stale data with fresh
data from other members of the replication group.
    Additional Information:
Error: 9061 (The replicated folder has been offline for too long.)

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this…
    «Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.»
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it’s trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can’t find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode?

How can I list the songs in an album in iTunes without having to do it one by one? Some albums are not numbered or they show 1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 1.

Poor metadata needs to be corrected if the album is to display properly in iTunes. iTunes sees an «album» as any collection of tracks with the same Album title and the same Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist isn’t set). Each track of the album should have distinct Track V of W and Disc X of Y vaules. W,X,Y are optional, but X may be needed for multi disc albums.

My hard drive fried and had to be replaced. I’m trying to install CS4 from my original discs but keep getting this error message — «One or more of the required components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard failed to install correctly». A customer service rep gave me a link to download off the Adobe site, but when I try to open the file to run it, I get this error message — «A problem occurred extracting the archive».
    Can anyone help?

Yep.  Nothing happens at all. Windows tries to execute the uninstaller, but I don’t get any other screen and all activity stops for the MSI.  I monitored it in Process Monitor and the MSI executable appears, but is quickly ended, like it couldn’t find anything or something.
It’s as if windows has a blank entry in Programs and Features, because it used to show the size of the Adobe application in the «Size» column.  Now it’s just blank.  Link to screenshot below:
    http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5006/screenshotcaf.jpg
Note the install date.  That’s when I was able to successfully reinstall it.  Now I can’t even do that.  I should also mention I tried Revo Uninstaller.  It deleted one small registry key, but nothing changed.
By the way, is the CS cleaner supposed to ask for a disc in the drive when you run it?  It refused to run unless I had one in it, so I used my install dvd.

I made the mistake of resetting my iPod to factory defaults. Now it will only partially sync to my music library. I continually get an error message saying that certain songs are not authorized for my computer, although they are in the iTunes library on the computer and will play. It’s these songs that won’t transfer to the iPod. I have deauthorized and re-authorized the computer but no joy. Any ideas?

    Hello there DesertRat71,
I was thinking that some of the songs in your library may have been purchased under a different apple id. You have already done the first thing I would have done by de authorizing and re authorizing. To verify this, highlight one of the songs that will not sync over and use File>Get Info. Here is the help menu link for it if you need it help://bookmark=’https://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/11.0/help/index.html?localePa th=English.lproj#itns2937′
In the Summary section there will be an Apple ID entry. If it shows something different than what you are currently using then I recommend signing into the Apple ID it shows and authorizing the computer for that one as well.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How to restrict users working on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2

    Dear All,
We are having an infrastructure setup of around 500 client computers managed through group policy.

Since this account requires extremely strict environment, we need to figure the solution for restricting the users from access anything locally.

How to restrict users logged on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and browsing other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2 ?
Can we disable Network Tab on the left hand pane ?

Must be serious because you have stated the problem 4 times now.
Here are a number of things that you can try and maybe one of them will help.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears — ignore the red slider — let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes — a song or podcast …. if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn’t work — sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons — tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles — the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.
You can also try going to the App Store, find an app that needs an update, tap on the app icon to bring up the description page, then tap on install that way, rather than using the Update option from the app updates screen.
And … You can always install the updates in iTunes on your computer and then sync them to the iPad.

  • HELP!!!  Message — (One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?)  How do I get this to stop?

I bought a new Sony Vaio Laptop running Windows 8, 64bit, i7 processor.  Everytime I open iTunes and then close out, the following message occurs: (i-tunes message — One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?) Then it starts counting down from 20 seconds unless I just click on the (Quit) button.  How do I get this to stop?  Please be specific, I am challenged when it comes down to computers.
    Thank You

This was extremely annoying for me, also.  I started uninstalling unneeded Sony applications to try to narrow down the problem.  It turned out not to be a Sony application… it is some functionality built into the bluetooth driver software package by Broadcom.  Uninstalling the bluetooth package (via the control panel) takes care of the problem.  Itunes also boots up way quicker.  But uninstalling it will remove features related to bluetooth and nfc.   For me, that isn’t an issue, since I don’t use them.  Since you said you’re «computer challenged» I would probably just send an email to sony complaining about the problem.  They’ll get in touch with Broadcom eventually (the manufacture of the drivers) and get the problem fixed.
Side note: the Broadcom package is huge…  nearly 1GB in size.  Which is crazy.  I can’t imagine what it does considering the size of it.  Entire operating systems can take up less storage.  Also, I have no idea how it starts an itunes plugin without placing it into the standard plugin directories.

  • On a Windows 2016 Server Standard, single server, which also functions as the domain controller for a small office, upon each restart I get Event ID 1202 shown below

    Thank you.

  • DFS Replication failed to contact Domain Controller…..

I have seen this error since the inception of this stand alone AD PDC instance of Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials.

    Hi,
Did you mean that you did not configure a DFS server in the new DC but you get the DFSR error 1202 in your event log? Then the issue is not related to the existing SBS domain.
Please try to turn off the Windows Firewall to check if it causes the issue. You could also refer to the articles below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • DFSR failed to contact domain controller

Im having an odd problem with DFSR group we created to replicate web content between two of our web servers.
In event viewer we have this event 1202 for DFSR.

I sent an email to TerraGo Support and they sent the following response: «This has bug has been discovered and our development team is quickly creating a patch to resolve the problem. The patch should be available within a week or two. For your reference, the bug number assigned to this case is: 3620. Check back in about two weeks and hopefully the patch will be available. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.»
