Error 36 on Western Digital HDD
Hello,Yesterday I was trying to copy several photos and videos from the Mac App Photos to a folder on my external Hard Disk WD My Passport 1TB.During the process, both Finder and the Photos froze. I then forced the closing of Finder (which was Not Responding) and then rebooted my Mac. However, since the reboot, I cannot access anymore the folder I was copying these files to. I get an error code -36. The folder is shown as blank/Zero bytes (which is wrong because it should have several Gigs of files) and when I try to make any change to the folder (create a file within it, zip it, move it) I get this -36 error.I have tried to run a dot_clean command but unsuccessfully. The Hard Disk is NTFS formatted and I use Mounty to use it on Mac. I do not have any other problem in terms of usability related to the Hard Disk, as I can read/write in all the other path in the drive.
Can someone please help me to recover my data?Is there any workaround?Thanks!Leo198

Seems the wrong Format to Restore to, and perhaps some open files on the destination?

Hi, I have the same problem with a 128 gigabyte Nifty SD Driver for my Macbook Pro Retina Late 2012. It has always worked perfectly but from the latest Mojave upgrade it is impossible to write, my Nifty sd drive works only for reading; if I try to format it with Disk Utility, the operation is interrupted. My username is enabled in both reading and writing x the SD disk Nifty. I hope Apple will solve the problem with a new upgrade and be more careful in the future before making the upgrades public.

Disk Utility Error 5342 — can I still restore my hard drive files?
I could successfully use hdiutil
for creating a dmg file on my local El Capitan box, but it’s failed with on OS X 10.9.5 of Travis CI with the error
hdiutil: create failed — error -5342
The command used to creating image is
hdiutil create -ov -size 512k -type UDIF -fs UDF "$FIXTURE_ROOT/empty.dmg"
$FIXTURE_ROOT
is a exist temp dir. You can find the very details on Travis Logs.

I often had this problem, until I learned (somewhere) that hdiutil often mis-calculates the size, and that causes it to fail. So estimate the size yourself, and double it in the -size parameter. Empty space in a dmg does not increase its size significantly.

hdiutil create -ov -size 512k -type UDIF -fs UDF "$FIXTURE_ROOT/empty.dmg"
$FIXTURE_ROOT
— существующий временный каталог. Подробную информацию можно найти в журналах Travis.

We got a ssd upgrade for a Mac (JetDrive 885) which comes with an enclosure to allow data to be copied to the new drive. This can be done with Disk Utility – as you are cloning the boot drive you need to run this in recovery mode (boot holding cmd – r). Presumably booting from a usb stick would work as well.
Once in disk utility choose the external drive, select Restore and choose to restore from the Macintosh HD. At this point we ran into an issue:
Could not change the partition type for /dev/disk1s1 - error -5342
We eventually found the problem – the new ssd had been configured with a MBR partition table, not GPT. To fix this go to the View
menu and choose Show All Devices
. Then select the external device at the top level and click erase. This should allow you to choose MBR or GPT partition schemes.
