The error 78 comes after trying to ‘update’ an iPhone when it’s been already stuck in recovery mode (only backlight, no cable screen)
At this state, the customer’s data is already GONE! You have no chance of a data recovery unless you have a 5S in hand (that leaves you with a chance of 50/50) otherwise you need to make a complete restore to bring it back to life.
I always try to attempt a an update before going with a restore (although without success) thinking perhaps Apple does something to fix it but nothing till now.
The main cause of this issue is the pseudo connection of the battery whilst the real reason behind this is obviously a missing shield that holds the battery connector to the motherboard (some people don’t just seem to forget it, they think well it’s not necessary, it’s ok!!); so if someone drops their phone consequently that connector pops up & leaves them thinking maybe it’s a low battery; when plugged in the charger & left for some time (in a bootloop) it just corrupts data & boots in recovery mode instead.
Hope this answers the old question.

After updating software, iTunes gave us an error message: ‘unknown error (78)’.
It also says that the software cannot be updated; it can only be restored to factory setting.
We do NOT have the photos and contacts backed up. We would like to recover/download photos and contacts BEFORE restoring to original factory setting. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Hi, would you please clarify how to check the state of the phone? I am not sure how to check whether it is ‘disabled’ or not. How do I check when it became ‘disabled’? Thank you.

What state is the phone in now? If it’s disabled, it’s too late for that. Once the phone is disabled, it can’t be backed up.

ERROR — 78 on iPhone 5s, need to recover the data
I got an IPhone 5s to get the data from, the battery wasnt working so I replaced it.
When I try to turn it on it blocks itself in a bootloop, I tried to restore, update from ITunes but it shows me error-78, so now the question is :
Is it a program that could help me to get the data from it or is it possible to do something on the motherboard to try to get the data ? Or is it only good to be restored in DFU ?
