I upgraded from 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04.1 but get a firmware error how can I fix this?

[solved] error installing linux-firmware
So sorry to be posting this here, but I have been looking for the last hour how and where to properly report a bug with no success. Lots of requests for users to report bugs but no help actually reporting them.
All the details are in the attached file. While installing Linux kernel 5.3.0.51.104 with the Update Manager, I get an error with the installed linux-firmware package post-installation script. This error causes a couple of subsequent dependency problems.
I would be happy to be educated as to where I should make this post.
Regards,
Dan

Attached file has the output from inxi -Fxz.
Troubleshooting steps taken:
- Read through the install log details looking for clues. Nothing I could understand.
- Rebooted machine. Did not resolve error.
- Uninstalled linux-firmware, rebooted, and reinstalled linux-firmware. Same issue.

Hello, dblake.
Based on the error messages, which you had attached to your initial post, the following steps might help solve the problem:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure linux-generic-hwe-18.04
Provided the commandline above succeeds, the next commandline would be:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure linux-generic-hwe-18.04
Provided the commandline above succeeds, the next commandline would be:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure linux-firmware
Hope this will work.
What causes me to be a bit pessimistic whether it will is the name of /boot/initrd.img-n
, which occurs in several places in the error messages. There is no file /boot/initrd.img-n on any of my systems. There are files named like this only:
/boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-46-generic
/boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-51-generic

Hello Karl,
Thank you for your response. Your first two commands, which are the same, fail due to their dependency on linux-firmware. Your third command where we try to configure linux-firmware fails due to (I suppose) a corrupted script somewhere. This is and continues to be my initial problem.
I looked in my /boot directory and found the following:
Code: Select all
-rw-r--r-- 1 18089055 May 14 13:20 initrd.img-HP-Pavilion-dv5-250G
-rw-r--r-- 1 18088789 May 14 13:20 initrd.img-m:
-rw-r--r-- 1 18088682 May 14 13:20 initrd.img-n:
-rw-r--r-- 1 18088803 May 14 13:20 initrd.img-o:
-rw-r--r-- 1 18088947 May 14 13:20 initrd.img-x86_64
I deleted them and reran
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure linux-firmware
and surprise! they all came back.

Hello, Dan.
Giving the same «dpkg —configure» commandline twice happened due to a copy-and-paste error on my side. So my mistake.
But very likely it would not have worked anyway.
The initrd.img-* filename all look terribly wrong. The fact that they came back suggests that something must be fundamentally wrong somewhere. Some configuration file, used by mkinitramfs very likely.
No good idea what precisely, though, at the moment.
Can you post the complete /boot directory listing, please. Command: ls -l /boot
Best regards,
Karl

Remove the irrelevant entries from there (…HP-Pavilion-dv5-250G, m, n, o, x86_64),
and see if karl’s instructions get the trick done afterwards…

Thing is, the only thing linux-firmware does when being installed, is to run update-initramfs for all kernels.
Hence why removing / reinstalling such had no effect.
But i can’t really figure out of what else mkinitramfs might be sourcing there & generating those junk entries.
Any similar irrelevant entries under ls /lib/modules/
? Aside that, i’m afraid i can’t make any other educated guesses…

Also, did you install a weird shell as /bin/sh? You have a very confusing mix of «x» vs «output of uname -x» there as in «HP-Pavilion-dv5-250G» (uname -n), «m» (the switch to have uname -m say «x86_64»), «n» (see first…), «o» (uname -o says GNU/Linux), «x86_64» (see second…). As in, err, what?

No, nothing odd in /lib/modules/
Code: Select all
[/lib/modules] $ ls -o
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 5 root 4096 Dec 13 05:09 5.0.0-32-generic
drwxr-xr-x 5 root 4096 Apr 25 23:42 5.3.0-46-generic

Oh, I wish it were that simple. No, nothing I can think of. The only thing that came to mind when I saw that «confusing mix» was that I define the following alias in my .bashrc file.
alias un='for a in n m o s r v ;do printf "$a: " ; uname -$a ;done'
I removed the alias just in case that was the issue, but the problem persisted.

Well… that’s still incredibly unlikely to not be related. I noticed that strange uname display at the top of your upgrade_failure.txt report but semi-shrugged it off as «probably normal» but this is then saying that you were executing this in an environment with the alias active. Can only recommend to remove it from wherever you added that alias and reboot, or if added just to e.g. ~/.bashrc, at least open a new terminal and make vewyvewy sure that the alias is not active by simply executing uname
before you try and reproduce the issue — for which I do believe that indeed you do still also want to first clean up /var/lib/initramfs-tools/ as previously advised.
[EDIT] Last one, I promise: Yes, the alias is un
anyway and yes, you already specified «just ~/.bashrc». Reading and thinking at the same time don’t always work…
[EDIT] Looking at said upgrade_failure,txt again I now see that was a manual edit your-sides, but still. Your issue is utterly inexplicable without a weird /bin/sh or weird configured environment for /bin/sh so, still, can’t imagine this not being related.
[EDIT] Can not reproduce with that exact alias in place either so, frankly, not a clue.

Again not adding much but I was tracing update-initramfs and I can not see how the bogus entries could return to /var/lib/initramfs-tools/ once manually deleted from there. Unfortunately having it be verbose makes it be very verbose but you may wish to, after deleting the bogus entries from /var/lib/initramfs-tools/, look at and/or post the output of sudo update-initramfs -u -k all -v
.
