Hey guys, today i had this error happen to me whenever i ran FBI or homebrew apps or anything of the like:

An exception occured

Processor : ARM11 (core 0)
Exception type : data abort
fault status : Translation — section

It showed up within seconds of opening any process, and i searched a lot for a fix almost everywhere on gbatemp and other websites, even formatted my sd card and checked it and everything.
But the only thing that worked for me was to remove any plugins i had installed from my sd card once i restored all the data on it, and also removed the file «boot.firm.bak» as i hadn’t noticed it before.I also re-downloaded the Luma3ds 8.1.1 zip and copied the boot.firm to the root of my sd card to replace the old file. This made everything right as far as i could tell and the error didn’t show up again. So i’m just posting this for anyone who has the same problem and is searching for a solution, even though it’s really stupid of me not to have realized it from the beginning cuz it’s so simple :D.

Note : i’m on Luma3ds ver 8.1.1 (had some major issues with 9.0) on an o3ds

this happens to me when the Action Replay plugin loads. If you do have the AR plugin for luma, disable the plugin loader in the luma menu before you launch homebrew apps.

  • #4

Also, if you have game patching enabled in luma3ds settings disable it then try again. it happened to me a while back too, and this fixed it.

  • #5

I had this error randomly too, i fix in this way.
Turn ur 3ds pressing select and mark disable arm11 exception handlers.
Press start to save and see if u have some problem

  • #6

thank you everyone for responding so fast :)

now this [see attachment 1] shows up when i try to play animal crossing new leaf.
as advised by ImInsane i disabled arm11 exception handlers.
as advised by merna, i checked to see if i had patching enabled; i didn’t, but i tried again with it enabled to no avail.
MJ7114, i don’t think i have an ‘ar plugin’ for luma? it was a while ago i set all this up. by the luma menu, do you mean the one where you hold select while booting 3ds? if so, i don’t see any mention of plugins on that list [see attachment 2].

i am not very tech savvy, sorry.
thanks again :)

well, errors like this only occur to me when i enable certain cheats that interfere with each other. Another possibility is the save is corrupted.

(optional) 1.To see if this is the problem, go to checkpoint, create a save, then wipe the game data. (don’t worry, you will have that backup in checkpoint. make 2 backups if you think you’ll do something wrong. cuz i do lol) If the game runs with the save wiped, then your other save probably is corrupted.

2. do you have any plugins that luma uses?

1. there’s no save data on animal crossing new leaf, it’s a fresh download and i haven’t played it yet. thus it doesn’t show up in checkpoint.

2. i’m not sure? i don’t know/remember what constitutes as a plugin (again, it was a while ago i got into all this homebrew stuff). could you tell me how i can check? thanks in advance

are you completely updated with luma and b9s?

are you completely updated with luma and b9s?

i did have the latest luma at the time, but downgraded it to 8.1.1 to try an emulate op’s method.
tried to update to the newest version (9.1) via the luma3ds updater, however no matter how many times it told me it was successful in updating, it kept telling me i was still on 8.1.1.
i tried manually updating to 9.1 by replacing the boot.firm, and now my screen won’t turn on :( please help!

thank you

Try deleting the boot.firm file, and let it use boot.firm.bak . If it still doesnt turn on, rename boot.firm.bak to boot.firm

  1. Copy everything off your SD card onto your computer.
  2. Reformat your card as FAT32 + 32KB cluster size. Use guiformat if it’s bigger than 32 GB.
  3. Ensure your empty SD card is free of hardware defects by running a Full Write + Verify test in H2testw.
  4. Build a new bare bone CFW setup to test out using the archive in this post.

Your next steps will depend what your 3DS does.

or try putting 8.1.1 back

  • #17

i have put it back to 8.1.1 for now, just so i can still use my 3ds. only wanted to update it to see if that file ending in 8f would appear.
before i try turdpoocharger’s method, there’s something i’m confused about. am i supposed to do something with this ‘exception_dump_parser’ folder [see attachment]?? first time i tried to update i just emptied it’s contents into the root sd, screen wouldn’t turn on. second time tried moving the folder itself onto the root, screen still wouldn’t turn on.

——————— MERGED —————————

UPDATE:
just tried installing 9.1 by only replacing the boot.firm and leaving the exception_dump_parser folder alone, and it worked!
however, the 0000008f folder mj7114 spoke of still doesn’t appear

ok, lets try finding the home menu folder, or the 0000008f folder. Please answer the two questions questions

is there more than one 32 character folder in the Nintendo 3DS folder?
is «view hidden files» enabled in file explorer?

Multiple long folder names in Nintendo 3DS folder

This occurs when you use your SD card in multiple 3DS devices and is intended to prevent inadvertently merging data that would not be valid on other devices. To figure out which long folder name is correct for your 3DS, follow these instructions:

  1. Rename the Nintendo 3DS folder to BACKUP_Nintendo 3DS
  2. Reinsert your SD card into your device and power on your device
  3. Wait for the device to generate the SD card data
    • Your applications will have disappeared. This is normal and will be resolved shortly
  4. Power off your device and reinsert your SD card into your computer
  5. Перейдите в папку Nintendo 3DS на SD-карте
  6. Copy the 32 character long name of the folder you see
    • This is your true ID0 that you will use in Section II of Seedminer
  7. Delete the Nintendo 3DS folder
  8. Rename the BACKUP_Nintendo 3DS folder to Nintendo 3DS

Bruteforce Movable skips to step 4

The website has already mined your movable.sed using your friend code and ID0 combination. You can use the movable.sed that it provides you.

Important! You have been locked out of the automated part1 dumper system…

Your friend code was blocked from using the friend code bot because your 3DS did not successfully friend the bot. Ensure your 3DS is properly connected to the Internet, then join Nintendo Homebrew on Discord and ask to be unlocked.

We were unable to successfully complete your bruteforce request. :`(

The website has determined that your movable.sed cannot be brute-forced. Ensure that you gave the correct ID0 to the website. If your ID0 is correct, then you will be unable to use Seedminer and you will have to use an alternate method that will require additional games or hardware.

DSiWare Management menu crashes without showing BB3 multihax menu

Ensure that F00D43D5.bin is the only file in Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> Nintendo DSiWare. If it is, then re-create it with the Bannerbomb3 Injector.

Also, ensure that bb3.bin is on the root of the SD card. If it is missing, then download the latest release of Bannerbomb3 (direct download), and copy the bb3.bin file to the root of your SD card.

If neither of these solutions fixes this problem, then custom firmware may have been uninstalled on this device in a way that makes this method impossible to perform. If this is the case and Safe Mode works, you will need to follow an alternate branch of Seedminer. If Safe Mode doesn’t work or you need assistance with this matter, join Nintendo Homebrew on Discord and ask, in English, for help.

DSiWare Management menu does not crash

F00D43D5.bin is missing from Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> Nintendo DSiWare. Make sure that Nintendo DSiWare is correctly spelled and spaced. Uppercase/lowercase does not matter.

DSiWare Management shows a question mark

There may be an issue with your F00D43D5.bin file (it may be corrupted or intended for the wrong 3DS). Re-create your F00D43D5.bin file with the Bannerbomb3 Injector, ensuring that you use the movable.sed file for your console.

Installing boot9strap (USM)

Safe Mode system update succeeds instead of giving error 003-1099

unSAFE_MODE is not installed. [Follow the instructions](installing-boot9strap-(usm)] to install it.

Red screen after selecting «Detailed Setup»

The file usm.bin is missing or misplaced. Download the latest release of unSAFE_MODE and place usm.bin on the root of your SD card. Do not add the .bin extension if you do not already see it.

There is also a possibility that the console isn’t reading your SD card. Make sure it is inserted and formatted correctly.

Failed to open SafeB9SInstaller.bin

The file SafeB9SInstaller.bin is missing or misplaced. Download the latest release of SafeB9SInstaller, extract it, and place SafeB9SInstaller.bin on the root of your SD card. Do not add the .bin extension if you do not already see it.

Failed to mount the SD card!

Back up your data and reformat your SD card as FAT32 with the recommended tool depending on your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). MiniTool Partition Wizard and the HP formatting tool (HPUSBDisk) are known to cause issues with 3DS SD cards.

If this is unsuccessful, try using another SD card.

Error on Fredtool Injector page

Ensure that your movable.sed and DSiWare backup come from the same console. A mismatch will result in an error.

Unable to select «Haxxxxxxxxx!» because the BB3 multihax menu appears

You forgot to delete F00D43D5.bin from the SD card. Navigate to Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> Nintendo DSiWare on your SD card and delete the F00D43D5.bin file.

«Haxxxxxxxxx!» does not appear

There is an issue with your 42383821.bin file (it is incorrect, missing, misplaced, or corrupted). Re-create your files with the DSIHaxInjector_new website and ensure that you place the 42383821.bin file from output.zip -> hax in Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> Nintendo DSiWare.

DS Connection Settings launches normally

Your 00000001.sav and/or otherapp.bin files may be misplaced. Ensure that 00000001.sav is in Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data and that otherapp.bin is on the root of your SD card.

If your files are in the correct locations, re-create the save using the PicHaxx Save Tool, then place it in Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data. Ensure that the file is named exactly 00000001.sav and that you used your console’s movable.sed to create it. Re-download the latest release of unSAFE_MODE, place the .bin file relevant to your console from the otherapps_with_CfgS folder to the root of your SD card, and rename it to otherapp.bin. Do not add the .bin extension if you do not already see it.

Game starts normally

Your modified 00000001.sav file may be misplaced, or you may have used the wrong movable.sed when creating it. Re-generate your movable.sed from Bruteforce Movable, then re-create the save using the PicHaxx Save Tool and place the resulting file (00000001.sav) in Nintendo 3DS -> <ID0> -> <ID1> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data.

«An exception occurred» after trying to launch Homebrew Launcher from Download Play

There is an issue with your boot.3dsx file (it is missing, misplaced, or corrupted). Download the latest release of the Homebrew Launcher and place boot.3dsx on the root of your SD card, replacing any existing file. Make sure you are extracting the ZIP file with any tool other than WinRAR, as it is known to cause issues with 3DS-related files.

«Scripts directory not found» in GodMode9

You did not copy the gm9 folder from the GodMode9 .zip to the root of your SD card. Download the latest release of GodMode9 and place the gm9 folder on the root of your SD card, merging it with the existing one.

Boot issues on devices with custom firmware

The steps detailed here generally assume that your device has a modern custom firmware setup (boot9strap + Luma3DS 8.0 or greater). If your console is running an older homebrew setup (for example, something based on arm9loaderhax or menuhax), you should update your setup before trying these instructions.

Power/notification light indicators

My device powers off when I try to turn it on, and/or the notification LED shows a color on boot

There is an issue with your boot.firm file. If you’re running boot9strap 1.4, your 3DS notification LED may flash a certain color. This color is used to diagnose issues involving your boot.firm file on SD card or internal memory. On older versions of boot9strap, the blue light will power off almost immediately when trying to turn on the device.

If the notification LED flashes:

  • White: Your 3DS was not able to find boot.firm on your SD card or on internal memory.
  • Magenta: Your 3DS was not able to find boot.firm on your SD card. It was able to find boot.firm on internal memory, but the file is corrupted.
  • Red: Your 3DS was able to find boot.firm on both your SD card and on internal memory, but both files are corrupted.

You can get a new boot.firm file by downloading the latest release of Luma3DS, extracting it, and placing boot.firm on the root of your SD card. If your boot.firm file is consistently being detected as corrupted, you may want to check your SD card for errors (Windows, Linux, or macOS). Also, note that the 3DS tends to have issues with files extracted using WinRAR.

If you hear a “popping sound”, potentially accompanied with the backlight turning on for a split second, there is a hardware issue with your device (such as a disconnected backlight cable). You may be able to get your device to boot by holding it at certain angles.

My device gets stuck on a black screen with blue power light staying on

The steps below can be attempted in any order, but are listed from least to most time-consuming.

  1. Power off your device, remove the SD card, re-insert it, then power on your device.
  2. Power off your device, eject the game cartridge if inserted, power on your device, then wait up to ten minutes. If your device boots within ten minutes, the issue has been fixed and is unlikely to reoccur
  3. Rename the Nintendo 3DS folder on your SD card to Nintendo 3DS_BACKUP, then attempt to boot. If your device successfully boots, there is some issue within your Nintendo 3DS folder. Try clearing HOME Menu extdata:
    • Navigate to /Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/extdata/00000000/
+ Delete the corresponding folder for your 3DS region:

      • EUR регион: 00000098
      • JPN регион: 00000082
      • USA регион: 0000008f
      • CHN регион: 000000A1
      • KOR регион: 000000A9
      • TWN регион: 000000B1
  4. Try booting into recovery mode and updating your system:
    • Power off your device
    • Hold (Left Shoulder) + (Right Shoulder) + (D-Pad Up) + (A)
    • Power on your device
    • If you were successful, the device will boot to an “update your system” screen
  5. Follow the CTRTransfer guide
  6. For further support, ask for help at Nintendo Homebrew on Discord

Hacking Luma3DS 9.0 ErrDisp

I am trying to figure out this issue. I have attempted to redownload the boot.firm, formatted the SD card (SDXC), and flashing back to a previous NAND to no avail. The only progress I’ve made is determining that when the SD card is in the system, the home menu will not even boot and it goes straight to the error you see below, but if I take the card out, it gets to the home menu before crashing. I am at a loss. Has anyone experienced this issue, and if so, did you solve it and how?

If you can’t see the image, here is the text from it:

An error occurred (ErrDisp)

QTM is the driver for stabilized 3D, and I frankly don’t know why it would crash depending on whether the SD is in (or at all). Camera troubles?

For the «time of other people is free» series: tried flashing a known good ctrtransfer image (in case of OS corruption)?
Fully restoring a nand backup, immediately recreating a backup, and comparing them (nand failure. you would probably be the first)?

For the «time of other people is free» series: tried flashing a known good ctrtransfer image (in case of OS corruption)?
Fully restoring a nand backup, immediately recreating a backup, and comparing them (nand failure. you would probably be the first)?

So what you are saying is that something with the 3D stabilizer driver is possibly corrupted? I haven’t tried to use the camera or 3D on this console, nor do I have any software that isn’t stock on it that actively utilizes the 3D or camera.

When I restored the NAND backup the same issue occurred, which tells me that it might be that backup has a corruption somewhere in the file. If I created a SYSNAND backup on my other N3DS and used it for this one, is it possible it will resolve the issue, or do I run the risk of bricking it?

EDIT: If it helps, I used my other N3DS XL to do a system transfer following the 3DS Guide website instructions. So maybe the backup NAND on my original WOULD work?

Seedminer

Important! You have been locked out of the automated part1 dumper system.

Ensure that F00D43D5.bin is the only file in Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> Nintendo DSiWare .

F00D43D5.bin is missing from Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> Nintendo DSiWare .

Installing boot9strap (USM)

unSAFE_MODE is not installed.

Ensure that your movable.sed and DSiWare backup come from the same console. A mismatch will result in an error.

Unable to select «Haxxxxxxxxx!» because the BB3 multihax menu appears

You forgot to delete F00D43D5.bin from the SD card. Navigate to Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> Nintendo DSiWare on your SD card and delete the F00D43D5.bin file.

«Haxxxxxxxxx!» does not appear

There is an issue with your 42383821.bin file (it is incorrect, missing, misplaced, or corrupted). Re-create your files with the DSIHaxInjector_new website and ensure that you place the 42383821.bin file from output.zip -> hax in Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> Nintendo DSiWare .

DS Connection Settings launches normally

Haxxxxxxxxx! was not copied from your SD card to your system memory.

It is possible that boot9strap was not successfully installed. Follow section B of this page.

Homebrew Launcher (PicHaxx)

Your 00000001.sav and/or otherapp.bin files may be misplaced. Ensure that 00000001.sav is in Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data and that otherapp.bin is on the root of your SD card.

If your files are in the correct locations, re-create the save using the PicHaxx Save Tool, then place it in Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data . Ensure that the file is named exactly 00000001.sav and that you used your console’s movable.sed to create it. Re-download the latest release of unSAFE_MODE, place the .bin file relevant to your console from the otherapps_with_CfgS folder to the root of your SD card, and rename it to otherapp.bin . Do not add the .bin extension if you do not already see it.

«An exception occurred» or Errdisp when opening Picross

Your device already has custom firmware. You should check for CFW.

Game starts normally

Your modified 00000001.sav file may be misplaced, or you may have used the wrong movable.sed when creating it. Re-generate your movable.sed from Bruteforce Movable, then re-create the save using the PicHaxx Save Tool and place the resulting file ( 00000001.sav ) in Nintendo 3DS -> -> -> title -> 00040000 -> 0017c100 -> data .

Installing boot9strap (Soundhax)

If your device is on system version 9.4.0, 9.5.0, or 9.6.0, you may be encountering a bug with an old version of universal-otherapp. Download the latest version from here.

If your device is not on those firmwares, it likely indicates that you already have custom firmware. You should check for CFW.

«An error has occurred, forcing the software to close. » (white message box)

There is an issue with your otherapp.bin file (it is missing, misplaced, or corrupted). Download the latest release of universal-otherapp and place it on the root of your SD card.

You have the wrong Soundhax file for your device and region, or your device is incompatible with Soundhax. In the latter case, you should update your device to the latest version and follow Seedminer.

Installing boot9strap (SSLoth-Browser)

This likely indicates that you already have custom firmware. You should check for CFW.

«An error has occurred. Hold down the POWER button to turn off the power. » (black screen with text)

The file arm11code.bin is missing or misplaced. Download the latest release of universal-otherapp, place otherapp.bin on the root of your SD card and rename it to arm11code.bin . Do not add the .bin extension if you do not already see it.

«An error has occurred, forcing the software to close. » (white message box)

Finalizing Setup

The steps below can be attempted in any order, but are listed from easiest to hardest to perform.

  1. Set your DNS settings to “Auto”
  2. Move closer to your WiFi router
  3. Update from Safe Mode by turning off the console, holding (Left Shoulder) + (Right Shoulder) + (D-Pad Up) + (A) on boot, and following the on-screen prompts
  4. Delete your WiFi connection, then reconnect to your WiFi again
  5. Reboot your WiFi router
  6. Connect to a different WiFi connection, like a mobile hotspot
  7. Nintendo servers may be down; Try again later
  8. If you still get an error, follow CTRTransfer, then try again
  9. For further support (in English), join Nintendo Homebrew on Discord

Unable to enter Rosalina menu due to broken Left Shoulder / Down D-Pad / Select button(s)

  3. Rename the Nintendo 3DS folder on your SD card to Nintendo 3DS_BACKUP , then attempt to boot. If your device successfully boots, there is some issue within your Nintendo 3DS folder. Try clearing HOME Menu extdata:
    • Navigate to /Nintendo 3DS/ / /extdata/00000000/ + Delete the corresponding folder for your 3DS region:
      • EUR регион: 00000098
      • JPN регион: 00000082
      • USA регион: 0000008f
      • CHN регион: 000000A1
      • KOR регион: 000000A9
      • TWN регион: 000000B1
  4. Try booting into recovery mode and updating your system:
    • Power off your device
    • Hold (Left Shoulder) + (Right Shoulder) + (D-Pad Up) + (A)
    • Power on your device
    • If you were successful, the device will boot to an “update your system” screen
  5. Follow the CTRTransfer guide
  6. For further support, ask for help at Nintendo Homebrew on Discord

@holly-hacker

As @sora10pls mentioned, this is a known issue. See the issue he linked for an explanation. I think this issue can be closed.

@TuxSH

This is actually a bug in Nintendo’s code, and want unoticed because HM was siletenly terminated.

Worked around (fixed) in latest commit anyways.

@Masterpokeagsg

Currently updated to B9s 1.2 and luma 8.0 I appeared the error that many happened to them, like the one that creates a file called Crashdump in old 3ds Luma / dumps / arm11 / crash_dump_00000000.dmp
I can not take a photo I’m sorry :(. Forget to put

  • Old 3DS
  • B9s 1.2 w/ Luma 8.1
  • Firmware: 11.4.0-37U

@jnozsc

sorry for previous post in this ticket, notice it is my side’s issue. thanks

@XiNaru

That unfortunately did not help me …. I have the firmware 11.4.0-37E Luma 3DS 8 and boot9strap. Yesterday updated and came with me just in a game, after the use of an ntr cheats, and now the savegame is not right anymore.

@XiNaru

But is the same error. Arm11: an exception occured. So I thought there was a connection between ntr and arm11, since I had before the update on boot9strap 1.2 and on luma 8 no problems with ntr had had.

@atom505

can you help me also?

@LiberoPat

Has the issue pulled up by OP been fixed? I’m switching from Reinand to B9S & Luma and this same exact problem is occurring right now when I boot up my N3DS which has 9.2.0 sysnand.

-update: now trying to save the microsd where the error occurs in, since I have several games in it. Tried deleting files and folders created when following 3ds.guide but error still occurs when this memory card is inserted. Trying to figure out why.
I think the error may have occurred when I tried to installing b9s with instructions on how to with a stock N3ds, forgetting I had arm9hax installed already. Not sure, but it’s my only fault.
Will try to reinstall luna and b9s with a new memory card and hopefully fixes this bug.

-ok I solved my issue, by pressing select and checking «auto-boot emunand» along with show in system settings, and now I’m good~

-update 2: I don’t think I’ve successfully installed B9S due to this issue :/
-final: solved all issues by updating sysnand to latest firmware..

Same as you, except for the final solution, i cant update my SysNAND because i cant access it, when i try with no select «auto-boot emunand» it pop up me the error or if i try turning on the 3DS without SD card it shutdown inmediatly, i only can access the EmuNAND (thanks to you), what did you do to update your SysNAND¿, from the EmuNAND or you could access your SysNAND without problems¿

Sorry about my english

@cactuar

I have the same problem, I can only access my emunand. How did you update your sysnand? Thank you!

Error code on certain games

An exception occurred

Processor: ARM11 (core 1)
Exception type: undefined instruction
Current process: loader (0000000000000000)

I get this error with different crash dumps on certain games downloaded from the internet. So far it’s happened to Blaster Master 0, Super Castlevania IV, Final Fight, Earthbound and Mega Man VII. From what I’ve seen, this error is common but I can’t find any way of fixing it. Any ideas?

I’m using a new 2DS XL with Luma3DS CFW v10.0.1-c913de1

  • 3DS:EXCEPTION

This page lists possible causes and fixes of Luma3DS exception screens. They are not applicable to every situation, but cover most common known issues.

Reading a Luma3DS exception screen

A Luma3DS exception has four (or five, in a few cases) different parts to it that help in finding its cause, as follows:

Luma3DS exception.png

  • Processor: What part of the system is causing the exception. The two processors are:
    • Arm9: The ‘security processor’ of the system. These exceptions usually result from errors in NAND data or hardware faults in either the 3DS or its SD card.
    • Arm11: The ‘userland’ of the system. These exceptions have numerous causes but are often related to broken software or user data.
  • Exception type: How the system is causing the exception. These categories are often too broad to be helpful, but three of them are more precise:
    • data abort: Oftentimes related to a broken mod or broken HOME Menu data. Occasionally related to custom firmware data being broken.
    • prefetch abort (svcBreak): Oftentimes an issue with data on the NAND, even when Arm11. Can also happen when launching an out-of-region game.
    • undefined instruction: Usually either a broken piece of software (if not on boot) or outdated boot.firm (if on boot).
  • Fault status: Why the system is causing the exception. Normally not helpful except for developers.
  • Current process: Where the error is coming from in the system. Often the most helpful part of the exception. Some examples of processes are as follows:
    • fs: The filesystem, i.e. either the SD card or the NAND.
    • menu: Data that is opened either as a part of the HOME Menu or at the same time as it.
    • loader: The service that opens apps, meaning the app you last tried to open has an issue.
    • nwm: Networking services, almost always WiFi.
  • R0: Usually just internal data that’s not worth reading. There are two notable exceptions, however:
    • Arm11 loader exception: If R0’s contents start with a C or D, R0 is an error code. This code usually gives the exact cause of the issue.
    • Arm11 pm exception: If R0’s contents are E0E01BF5, boot.firm is guaranteed to be too outdated to work.

Known Errors

In the following lists, the file prefixes on file paths refer to the starting location. sdmc:/ refers to the SD card, and numbers in the format of [X:] refer to GodMode9’s drive numbers.

Error On Boot

Exception Type Problem & Solution
Any Files on the SD are corrupted.

To fix, verify that your SD card is not faulty. If it is verified working, make a backup of all intact files, format the SD card, and try booting again.
A system save located on the NAND in [1:]/data has a problem.
System-unique files are missing from the NAND in [1:]/rw/sys.
data abort The shared2 folder in [2:] SYSNAND TWLN is missing.

To fix, create this folder.
System titles have been deleted.

To fix, perform a Safe Mode update.
If this does not work, perform a CTRTransfer.
prefetch abort (svcBreak) The system movable, [1:]/private/movable.sed, is 288 bytes but a flag is enabled that expects a size of 320 bytes.

To fix, boot into GodMode9 and select SYSNAND CTRNAND, then go into the private folder.
Inside this folder, you will see a file named movable.sed. Select it, and under the options menu, select Show in Hexeditor.
Green-colored numbers will appear in the middle of the screen — press A and then unlock writing to sysNAND (lvl2).
At the beginning of the file, look for the set of numbers 53 45 45 44 00 01. Once you find these numbers, hold A and press D-PAD DOWN while the 01 value is highlighted to change it to 00. Press B, then A, then B to save changes and exit from the hexeditor, then press START to reboot your console.
SYSNAND CTRNAND has bad CMACs.

To fix, press R+A on the SYSNAND CTRNAND drive and Fix CMACs for drive. The console will act like it has been formatted after this, and this is intended.
prefetch abort (kernel panic) The console likely has a hardware issue.
undefined instruction The console likely has a hardware issue.

Error On Boot

Current Process Exception Type Problem & Solution
boss data abort The current firmware version is too old for SpotPass to work. Perform a Safe Mode update.

If this does not work, you may require a CTRTransfer.
fs any Can be anything from SD card problems to hardware issues.
hid any Potential hardware problems.
ic2, spi any The console has a serious hardware issue that likely is not easily fixable.

Join the Nintendo Homebrew Discord and ask, in English, for help.
mset any System Settings is broken in some way — this may indicate that the console has a hardware issue.

To fix, perform a CTRTransfer, or a Manual CTRTransfer if that does not work.

If neither of these work, the console has a serious issue. Join the Nintendo Homebrew Discord and ask, in English, for help.
menu data abort Broken HOME Menu theme.

To fix, go into the folder sd:/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/extdata/00000000/ and delete the folder matching your region, one of the following:

USA: 000002cd
EUR: 000002ce
JPN: 000002cc
Broken HOME Menu extra data.

To fix, go into the folder sd:/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/extdata/00000000/ and delete the folder matching your region, one of the following:

USA: 0000008f
EUR: 00000098
JPN: 00000082
KOR: 000000A9
Broken HOME Menu application.

To fix, either perform a Safe Mode update, attempt to enter System Settings before the crash occurs and delete the application in Data Management, or reformat the SD card.
prefetch abort An installation of menuhax is conflicting with the custom firmware.

To fix, place the menuhax67_installer.3dsx file from [this download] into sd:/3ds, run it through Homebrew Launcher, and choose REMOVE.
prefetch abort (svcBreak) The f000000b folder in SYSNAND CTRNAND is broken, its exact location being at [1:]/data/<ID0>/extdata/00048000/f000000b.

To fix, backup f000000b by pressing R+A while highlighting it, then selecting Copy to 0:/gm9/out. Once it is backed up, delete the folder. If this does not fix the issue, copy the folder back where it was.
ns prefetch abort (svcBreak) The Luma configuration setting Autoboot Homebrew is set to boot to a title that does not exist.

To fix, disable the option or install an application that matches the title ID set in sd:/luma/config.ini.
nwm any The WiFi chipset’s hardware is damaged or dead.

To fix, replace the WiFi chipset with a new one. To avoid the error until then, disable WiFi on the 3DS and do not turn it back on.

If the 3DS is an old model, you can disable WiFi with an external switch. New models must instead disable it through the HOME Menu Settings or Rosalina. Repeatedly pressing the keycombo for Rosalina while powering on might let you access Rosalina before it can crash.
pm undefined instruction The installed version of Luma3DS likely does not support the current firmware version. This is guaranteed to be true if the contents of R0 are E0E01BF5.

To fix, update CFW.

Error During Use

Current Process Exception Type Problem & Solution
3dsx_app any The .3dsx file you opened is corrupted.

To fix, download a new copy of the .3dsx file. If this error happens when you open the Homebrew Launcher, download a new copy of boot.3dsx.

If the error still happens, test your SD for errors.
app
CtrApp
any The app you last opened is trying to use broken software.

To fix, disable all game mods, cheat codes, and plugins to ensure they are not the cause.

If the error still happens, then the game itself is likely faulty. If it is a system app, perform a CTRTransfer. Otherwise, if it is a cartridge dump, redump it, if it is an eShop game, click the Repair button at the bottom of its eShop page or delete and reinstall it, or if it is a cartridge, clean the cartridge and the 3DS cartridge reader with isopropyl alcohol.
GARDEN any Animal Crossing’s game data or savedata is having issues.

To fix, disable all game mods, cheat codes, and plugins to ensure they are not the cause. If the error still happens, then the game itself may be faulty. If it is a cartridge dump, redump it, if it is an eShop game, click the Repair button at the bottom of its eShop page or delete and reinstall it, or if it is a cartridge, clean the cartridge and the 3DS cartridge reader with isopropyl alcohol.

If the error yet still happens, ensure that you have not used a save editor before the error started happening. If you have used a save editor, the edits are broken and you will need to restore a backed-up save, or wipe the save and start over if you have no backup.
fs any Can be anything from SD card problems to hardware issues.
Kujira
Joker
niji_loc
any The app you last opened has an issue of some kind.

To fix, disable all game mods, cheat codes, and plugins to ensure they are not the cause. If the error still happens, ensure the game is the same region as the console — if it is not, force the game to use the correct region.

If the error yet still happens, then the game itself is likely faulty. If it is a cartridge dump, redump it. If it is an eShop game, click the Repair button at the bottom of its eShop page or delete and reinstall it. If it is a cartridge, clean the cartridge and the 3DS cartridge reader with isopropyl alcohol.
