What Causes The 0x800B0004 Error Message?
The 0x800B0004 error can be caused by numerous issues including:
- Registry errors
- Virus infections
- A corrupted package already downloaded (or partially downloaded) or having problems
- Damaged files or missing registration information
- A cryptographic issue.
How To Fix 0x800B0004 Errors On Your PC
Step 1 – Delete the partially downloaded contents of the corrupted package.
You can normally find these update packages in the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder of your system. You should try renaming this folder to “SoftwareDistributionBACKUP” and creating a new one to replace it.
Step 2 – Run “File Signature Verification”
File signature verification is basically where you see if all the files on your system are “signed” – which means that they are legitimate and 100% working. To do this, you need to use the “Sigverif” feature of Windows below:
- From the Start menu, select Run.
- In the Open field, type sigverif
- Select the OK button.
- Follow the prompts throughout the File Signature Verification process which is logged in SIGVERIF.TXT
- Check the summary of SIGVERIF.TXT, make sure Unsigned Files = 0.
- If there are unsigned files on your system, you need to talk to the developer of those files to sign them.
Step 3 – Use Windows File Checker (sfc)
It’s vital that you’re able to see whether all the files that Windows has are reliable and readable. Essentially, this process cans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. To do this, you can use the inbuilt scannow feature of Windows to help check all the files on your computer:
- From the Start menu, select Run.
- In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
- Select the OK button.
- Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
- Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
- Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Step 4 – Run Internet Explorer Repair
Internet Explorer is also a big cause of the 0x800B0004 error on your PC. You should ensure it’s not causing any problems by using the IE Repair tool in Windows:
- Search for IE.inf from C:WINDOWSinf
- Right click and select Install
- If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Step 5 – Clean The Registry
– Download This Registry Cleaner
The registry is a central database which stores all sorts of information and files for your system. This database is the central part of Windows which your system uses every day to help it remember everything from your latest emails to your desktop wallpaper. Unfortunately, the registry is also a big cause of problems as it is continually being saved in the wrong way by your PC. This is a big problem that can cause the 0x800B0004 error and other errors. To make sure the registry is not to blame, you should use a ‘registry cleaner’ to scan through the registry database and make sure that there are no damaged or corrupt settings inside it. You can download our recommended registry tool below:

There are problems with HP catalog en applicability rules.. sometimes they look for existance of a dll and this is not always right..
Using HP catalog with WSUS works only when you pupblish manual items to wsus and expire old ones manually..
It can still save you a lot of work creating packages for laptops for instance quick launch buttons but you cannot rely on detection mechanism..
Would be nicer to use detection, reporting and the HP cert but this is all not in the package..
What I wanted to do is use these updates in OSD task sequence building machines always with latest drivers…
Maybe somebody got this working but it looks like a bridge to far at this moment..
