Let’s take a look at how our Support Team recently helped out a customer with an error creating HKLM Software OpenVPN-GUI Key.
How to resolve the error creating HKLM Software OpenVPN-GUI Key
Have you been running into an error while creating HKLM Software OpenVPN-GUI Key and have no clue how to resolve it? Well, our Support Engineers have put together this short guide to help you out.
They have come up with two easy solutions for this specific error.
Reinstall OpenVPN
First, we have to delete the key files manually as well. We can get this done by heading to the Start Menu and clicking Run. Here, we will enter regedit in the popup box.
Then browse for HKEY LOCAL MACHINE and open the software tab to locate OpenVPN. Once we locate it, we have to delete all the OpenVPN-GUI keys. If OpenVPN is open in the background, it will prevent us from deleting the keys, so make sure it is not running beforehand.
After deleting the keys, we can easily uninstall OpenVPN from the device and install the latest version from the official website. If this troubleshooting tip does not do the trick, take a look at the next option offered by our Support Team.
Run OpenVPN as Administrator
If we are downloading the GUI keys without admin privileges, we are very likely to run into trouble with creating the HKLM Software OpenVPN-GUI key. In fact, this prevents us from overriding existing files or even adding new ones to the registry editor.
In this scenario, our Support Engineers recommend locating the OpenVPN GUI Installer and right-clicking it. Then we have to select Run as administrator. This allows us to run the application in admin mode, thereby allowing us to modify or add keys to the registry.

GET STARTED
OpenVPN is a VPN service that is free if you intend to use it at your home. However, the server provided by them which is used commercially requires you to purchase their license. Regardless, this software is one of the best VPN’s out there at the moment. It is easy to use and really user friendly.
However, users might sometimes run into an error after creating installing this software on their device. One of these problems is the ‘error creating HKLM software OpenVPN-GUI key’. This can be quite confusing to look at but we will show you some steps that can be used to troubleshoot.
- Reinstall OpenVPN
You might have run into some errors while installing this software on your device. To fix this you will first need to delete the key files manually. Then reinstall your application after that.
Start with opening up your ‘start menu’ and then enter ‘run’ and open it. A popup will open, type ‘regedit’ here and click enter. This will open up the registry editor for your computer. This can be used to change the already existing values or delete keys. After this, browse through HKEY LOCAL MACHINE which stands for HKLM.
Proceed to open the software tab and locate OpenVPN here. After you have successfully opened it, search for the OpenVPN-GUI keys here and delete all of them. If it doesn’t allow you to delete them then make sure that your software is not running in the background.
After deleting all the previous keys, uninstall OpenVPN from your device and search their website for the latest version. After downloading this file, restart your device to ensure that all the temporary cache files have been deleted. Now install the new copy of your OpenVPN software to fix your issue.
- Run as Administrator
One other problem you might be running into is that you are trying to download the GUI keys without admin privilege. This results in the device to stop you from overriding existing files or add new ones in the registry editor
For this, you will have to locate the OpenVPN GUI installer, which is used for creating keys. Right-click on this program and select ‘Run as administrator’. Click yes when a popup for confirmation comes out. This will allow your application to run in admin mode and it can then modify or add new keys to the registry. This will ensure that your software installs without any issue.
- Customer Support
Sometimes these steps might not fix your problem. This is because the user might be running into a technical error that can get really complicated to deal with. Even though that is the case, to solve this, you will have to contact the customer support team. They will reach out to you as soon as possible. Make sure to give them detailed information about your problems and not leave out anything so they may help you to the best of their knowledge.
OpenVPN Portable (OpenVPNPortable_1.6.6.paf.exe
) у него та же проблема.
любые идеи, как я могу это исправить?
I’m trying to run OpenVPN as a portable application and to that effect have installed it on a Windows 7 machine, copied the files to another Windows 7 machine and manually restored the registry settings using a .reg file. Whenever I try to run OpenVPN GUI I get the following error:
Error opening registry for reading HKLMSOFTWAREOpenVPN
I have verified that the key mentioned is indeed in the registry at the correct location with the correct values yet the GUI still complains. I’ve also tried running the GUI as an administrator (I’m logged in as an administrator) and changing the compatibility modes but nothing helped.
If I use OpenVPN Portable (OpenVPNPortable_1.6.6.paf.exe
) it has the same problem.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

You have to re-route it through the VFR mainframe. Either your application has been corrupted by the existing server or you have affected the registry through a different channel- PKN, maybe, could be the JumbleBlok net system- but whichever is the case, you’re still going to need to manually alter the channel course.
Try this, it’ll hopefully make things easier for you when working with the code:

It’ll help you redirect the proxy drive and use the OPICS system to get your app back on track.

open control panel and go to administrator tools. From there go to registry editor, when that opens go to hkey_current_user which should be one of the first files( for me it’s the second one). Next in that file go down to the software file delete the program that’s giving you the issue and then reinstall and that should fix this issue for this and other programs with similar issue. I hope this helps as the error i had was this (open vpn gui error opening registry for reading (HKLMsoftewareopenvpn). open vpn is probably not installed) and this fixed it, given i changed drived and the software was on the one i was overriding this gui stayed and gave me this issue for whatever reason and this is how i had to fix the issue.
have a great day and good luck to anyone who reads this.
