When does this error appear?
This error appears while attempting to configure a Layer 3 interface on a router or switch running Cisco IOS. It appears in one of the following 2 cases:
- When using the ip address command; or,
- When issuing the no shutdown command
Why does this error appear?
This error appears when multiple interfaces on a router are configured with IP Addresses from overlapping subnets.
Let’s look at an example:
In the following scenario, there is one router connected to 2 switches.
- Interface gi0/1 is enabled, connected to Switch1, and assigned the IP Address 172.20.100.1 255.255.254.0
- Interface gi0/0 is enabled and connected to Switch2. There is no IP Address assigned to gi0/0.

Suppose we now try to configure an IP Address on interface gi0/0. We attempt to configure the IP Address 172.20.101.1 255.255.255.0:

When we attempt to configure int gi0/0 with the IP Address 172.20.101.1 255.255.255.0 we are essentially assigning the interface to the network 172.20.101.0 /24
We cannot assign multiple interfaces to overlapping subnets. The router outputs a message indicating that the network 172.20.101.0 overlaps with the network connected to interface gi0/1.
A second example:
Let’s modify the scenario a little bit. In this scenario
- Interface gi0/1 is enabled, connected to Switch1, and assigned the IP Address 172.20.100.1 255.255.254.0
- Interface gi0/0 is shutdown and connected to Switch2. There is no IP Address assigned to gi0/0.

At this point gi0/0 is shutdown. Even if we configure an IP Address on it, this interface will not be involved in any routing decisions.
While the line protocol on an interface is down, we are allowed to configure an IP Address on it even if it overlaps with the network connected to another interface.
Let us now try to enable the interface. (It is already connected to an enabled interface on another device.)

I am trying to set up a network of for different organisational departments based on a given typology:
Using Cisco 2911 routers & 2960-24TT Switches.
With given addressing of:
'EIGRP 101' 172.16.16.0 /16
and
'OSPF 2018' Addressing of 192.168.17.0 /24
from this I created a network addressing scheme:
Using my addressing scheme and based on the given typology — I have attempted to recreate in Packet Tracer the network here:
As you can see in the top left ‘Management’ department subnet I have managed to set up Router0 through the Gi0/2 interface using the router’s CLI. However, using my addressing scheme, I was unable to set up the same router for the ‘Engineering’ department through Router0’s Gi0/1 interface due to a ‘overlap’ error:

This is my router! the topology is one router connected to one pc on g0/1, on g0/0 its connected to a switch then connected to a pc. the whole network is 202.101.99.0/24, using VLSM we had to break it down first with 98 usable hosts so I decided for the IP address of the router for g0/0 I want to use 202.101.99.129 255.255.255.128., then I assigned the pc 202.101.99.130, I went to assign the IP address to the g0/0 and its saying theyre over lapping..why is this

For interface g0/1
you’re using the network 202.101.99.128 /25
. With this, the network address is 202.101.99.128
, the usable hosts range from 202.101.99.129-202.101.99.254
. Your broadcast address would be 202.101.99.255
.
For interface g0/0
you assigned it 202.101.99.161
which is using the 202.101.99.160 /27
network. This overlaps with your previous network. Because as stated above, the 202.101.99.128 /25
network covers the ranges .129-.254
.
By looking at the chart below, you can see that your first network takes up all of the addresses in the red box, ranging from .128 - .255
In order to not have overlap, you would have to assign g0/0
one of the network addresses in the green box.
If each network is supposed to have 98 usable hosts, your best option would be to use the 202.101.99.0 /25
and 202.101.99.128 /25
