This guide is to Fix Project Zomboid Errors, Crashes, Issues, Lag, Freezes, and Black Screen on Windows. These are the most common errors that players are experiencing with Project Zomboid. You can fix these problems with the tutorial below.
Error log：

Disable error log
As it stands there is no way to disable the error box in game. The red box isn’t exactly a bad thing, it’s the way people deal with it that makes it a bad thing. If you look through the error messages, you can see that most of them are in fact harmless. Some people think that the error messages are the end of the world, but most of the time, they’re just the game trying to stop itself from crashing.
Which mod is causing the “unexpected error” ?
Project Zomboid has many mods for players to choose from, which greatly improves the gameplay. However, the different compatibility of different mods may be causing errors that may eventually corrupt your save. Here is a guide that will help identify which mods are causing these errors and how you can disable them.
World dictionary error
The error means that there are some issues with the Zomboid world, you can try to fix this by disabling the mod in the save, and update all your mods.
You can just go to the steam workshop and go to your subscribed items, unsubscribe them, it will delete the files related to the mods, then subscribe again. This should re-download your subscribed mods.
Error subscribing to workshop item
If you install a mod that are no longer in the workshop, you may need to manually remove it.
Workshop Item Version Is Different
If your workshop ID is messed up, the first thing you’re going to want to do is open up Steam and go to your Library. Under Project Zomboid, you’ll find Workshop. This is where you can install mods, but what we’re interested in right now is the Subscribed Items list.
Under Subscribed Items, you’ll see all of the mods that you’re subscribed to (it defaults to the date subscribed, but if you sort by date updated it’ll put the last most recent updates all the way at the top). For example, on 27 Jun some mods were recently updated so those are the ones I need to update.
To update a mod, first unsubscribe from it (if necessary), Then subscribe to it again (forcing it to update). Let Steam’s Download Manager finish downloading and installing it.
Some users had problems because the game itself is not compatible with updates. The update for the game’s Steam workshop module fails. However, the system has determined that these files have been updated and are complete. In this case, it requires manually deleting the game’s files and reinstall PZ in order to resolve the issue.
Error 1,2,3,4,5…. lua error
You may experience errors when using mods in Single Player mode, particularly if you see an Error X (number) message displayed in the lower right corner. The X indicates how many errors are currently being caused.
The first thing you should do was to identify which mod is causing the “error x”
p2p error & can’t connect to server
If you are getting the p2p connect error, the first thing you should do is make sure your files are up-to-date. This can be done by verifying the integrity of your local files. Next, you should check to see if Steam is starting the server on its own. If not, then you will need to start the server manually and open it from within Steam. Finally, make sure that your computer are connected to the internet, and also check Steam’s server status.
use wired connections instead of wifi if you are the server host.
make sure that UDP ports 16261, 8766, 8767 are open in an outbound direction.
Use a VPN to improve your connection to the server, it may have solved the problem.
Car gone after crash
The car might be down the street from where you spawned back into the game, but it’s position was probably recalculated differently. So try check along the road to see if it’s there.
Crashing on startup
- Right-click on Project Zomboid in your Steam library and select Properties.
- Disable both the steam overlay and the desktop game theater.
- Local files -> browse local files
- Find the project zomboid batch file in the root folder
- Double click on the project zomboid batch file (ProjectZomboid64.bat or ProjectZomboid32.bat )
- That will start the game
Resolution issue
If you are on fullscreen mode, go to the resolution settings in your game and change it to the resolution you want. Normal resolutions should be 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. Borderless mode always sets the resolution to your native one.
One option to try is to disable DPI scaling for only Project Zomboid. This may resolve the issue for you.
To disable DPI scaling on PZ, first locate the .exe files for the game(Check the “Crashing on startup ” section on this web page). Right click on the file and select “Properties”. Under the Compatibility tab, check the box next to “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings”.
In Windows 10 Version 1703 and later versions of Windows, the text of the Disable display scaling on high DPI settings option is changed to Override high DPI scaling behavior. This allows you to specify how applications should behave when displayed on a device with a high DPI setting. Scaling will be performed by the application.

When driving, the Black Wall can sometimes occur when the server is overloaded trying to load new tiles for the player. This usually isn’t an issue on highways, but can happen in main towns if the server has a higher “speed limit.” If this happens, players may be trapped between the Black Wall and zombies. A general fix could be found by adjusting the “speed limit” option on the server.
Based on the information provided, it appears that when multiple people are driving and one person has a slow connection, the other drivers are limited to the speed of that person’s connection.
it is best to stay close to your friend’s car in order to minimize the load on the server.

Update Graphics Card driver
- I’m on Nvidia Graphics Card. So I don’t know how to fix it on AMD. Hopefully they do it the same thing as me.
- First go to your Nvidia website -> http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
- Figure out what kind of your Nvidia Graphics Card is.
- There will be many options which one is perfect I don’t know fix yourself.
Disk write error
Try basic troubleshooting by using the advice at “Basic Steam Troubleshooting” on
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2274-IFLV-5334.
Also try added project zomboid and Steam to the exception list of anti-virus software.
Check record device frequency
- 1. Go into your device’s Sound settings. (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording )
- 2. Click on the ‘Microphone’ icon, check the Properties.
- 3. Change the ‘Frequency’ from 44100Hz (CD Quality) to a lower frequency, such as 22050Hz or 11000Hz if necessary.
- 4. Restart your device if you have not already done so in order for these changes to take effect.
Java.Lang.Outofmemory
Right click on Project Zomboid in your Steam library and select Properties. Press Local Files button > Browse.
Find the ProjectZomboid64.bat file
Change the -Xms and -Xmx settings to -Xms2G and -Xmx4G, then use this batch file to start the game.
Corrupted save files – world version is zero
I’ve been playing a lot of hours (like, a lot), and I don’t want to lose my lovely character. What can I do?
If you have a friend who has the same save game as you(multiplayer), and you’re experiencing this issue, ask them for their map_ver file. This is usually found in
C:UsersYourUserNameZomboidSaves” , replace it with yours, and most likely it will work fine
Or make a new save with the same map you used for the corrupted save file, copy the map_ver from the new save, copy it into the corrupted save and replace the old map_ver with the new one.
Save Your Character:
If the above method does not work, you can try copying your character data to a new save：
- create and enter your new world using the same mods as your old world.
- exit game.
- go back to the original old world save folder.
- you can see that the old save folder has a players.db and players.db-journal file
- copy and paste this two file across to the new world save folder.
- visit the new world you created
Addition：
If you want to copy your entire base with vehicles and ** items**, You need to copy the map_xxx_xxx.bin file that corresponds to the safe house you want to copy.
For example, if your safe house is located at the RoseWood Fire Department, open RoseWood online map and click on the Grid button.

console log
As soon as I open the executable, it gets to the last line in the log, hangs, and throws out a generic Windows «this program has stopped working» dialog.
I have no clue what’s causing this. The console log doesn’t share any insights either.
I’ve:

uninstalled and reinstalled fully,

unsubbed from all installed mods,

restarted my computer,
-
updated my drivers, my java installation,
-
tried to run the executable as an administrator and in Win7 compatibility mode,

tried running both versions (32 and 64 bit) of the executable,

and tried playing the game through the .bat files.
Nothing’s worked so far and I’m at my wits end. Any idea what’s happening here?

i have played this game for a while now and there has been no issues but hte day i bought it for my brother he set up the server and we were playing perfect logged out for dinner came back tryed to join the server and now it says «sorry there has been a error in the console.txt press any key to exit the game» tryed uninstalling it shutting off pc nothing has worked so far if anyone could help that would be amazing ! thanks look at my screenshots for the error in closer detail

Please HELP! «Unexpected Error» C:usersprofilezomboidconsole.txt
Whenever I try to load into a new game it ends up getting through the first texts of the game and then just stops? I haven’t found any discussions on this and have no clue to fix it, i have no mods on and it still does not load. It just says Unexpected Error occurred and then says that file may contain some useful info.. but there is no file name under that.

Oh my god, I just realized all my mods were turned on.. Im sorry lmao However I did disable it and it still gives the error. How do i go from patch 40 to 41 or vice versa? Just to check if i am running on an earlier version. Im kinda new to all of this sorry.

Oh my god, I just realized all my mods were turned on.. Im sorry lmao However I did disable it and it still gives the error. How do i go from patch 40 to 41 or vice versa? Just to check if i am running on an earlier version. Im kinda new to all of this sorry. Just to make sure that they are disabled, go to «C:UsersYourUserNameZomboid» again and delete the «mods» folder, it contains a file that loads the listed mods at game start, so deleting it will stop any mods from loading.
If you haven’t switched to the beta, then you are most likely playing version 40 as that is the default version. You can see the version in the main menu of the game as well on the bottom right corner.

Ребят, в общем, когда к другу подключаюсь «пишет игроки из более старых версий игры не могут быть загружены на этом сервере», сегодня играли и все норм было, у меня начала вылетать игра, я проверил целостность файлов, все норм, вылеты продолжились, я переустановил игру и вылезла эта херь, в гугле ничего нет по этому поводу, кто с таким сталкивался?

Как правило, проблема связана с перегретой видеокартой. Первым делом следует проверить провода, вдруг они перекрыли вентиляторы системы охлаждения, но если там полный порядок, тогда самое время сбросить разгон видеокарты: нужно войти в приложение MSI Afterburner (или подобное) и нажать на «Reset» .
Низкий FPS, Project Zomboid тормозит, фризит или лагает
Современные игры крайне ресурсозатратные, поэтому, даже если вы обладаете современным компьютером, всё-таки лучше отключить лишние/ненужные фоновые процессы (чтобы повысить мощность процессора) и воспользоваться нижеописанным методами, которые помогут избавиться от лагов и тормозов.
- Запустите диспетчер задач и в процессах найдите строку с названием игры (Project Zomboid). Кликайте ПКМ по ней и в меню выбирайте «Приоритеты» , после чего установите значение «Высокое» . Теперь остаётся лишь перезапустить игру.

Отключите «Защитник Windows»
Помимо антивирусной программы, также следует попробовать отключить «Защитник Windows». Поскольку он тоже запросто может быть причиной появления этих ошибок. Для этого нужно сделать следующее:
- Открыть «Центр безопасности Защитника Windows» выбрать настройки нажать на раздел «Защита от вирусов и угроз».
Проверьте путь на наличие кириллицы
Обязательно проверьте, что путь к приложению не содержал наличие кириллицы. Причём стоит отметить, что наличие в адресе «Пользователи» никак не влияет на это. Так что если после «Пользователи» идёт кириллица, тогда придётся создавать нового локального пользователя, у которого имя будет иметь латинские буквы. В таком случае также, возможно, придётся переустановить и само приложение на новом пользователе.
Воспользуйтесь чистой загрузкой
Решить проблему в таком случае можно чистой загрузкой. Как правило, это помогает в тех случаях, когда ошибка появляется при запуске Windows 10. Поскольку причина практически всегда связана с какой-то определённой программой или службой, что находятся в автозагрузках.
- Открываете в Windows 10 окно «Параметры», используя меню

Поэтому предлагаем воспользоваться нижеописанной инструкцией. Только перед тем, как начнёте что-то менять, убедитесь в наличие нужного раздела. Сделать это можно следующим образом:
в окне «Выполнить» введите команду regedit нажмите
после чего в окне «Редактор реестра» отыщите раздел, представленный ниже.
Запустите восстановление системы

Появляется цветной экран
Появление цветастого экрана часто связано с тем, что используются сразу две видеокарты. Если в материнской плате присутствует встроенный графический процессор, но играете на дискретном, игра в любом случае запустится на встроенном. Поэтому и возникают «цветные» проблемы, поскольку монитор подключён по умолчанию к дискретной видеокарте.
Не менее часто цветной экран появляется в том случае, если появились проблемы с выводом изображения. Подобное вызывает самые разные причины, но существуют две наиболее распространённые: 1 – стоят устаревшие драйвера; 2 – ваша видеокарта не поддерживается. Поэтому рекомендуем обновить в первую очередь драйвера.
Отсутствует DLL-файл или ошибка DLL
Для начала следует объяснить, как вообще возникают ошибки, связанные с DLL-файлами: во время запуска Project Zomboid обращается к определённым DLL-файлам, и если игре не удаётся их отыскать, тогда она моментально вылетает с ошибкой. Причём ошибки могут быть самыми разными, в зависимости от потерянного файла, но любая из них будет иметь приставку «DLL» .
Для решения проблемы необходимо отыскать и вернуть в папку пропавшую DLL-библиотеку. И проще всего это сделать, используя специально созданную для таких случаев программу DLL-fixer – она отсканирует вашу систему и поможет отыскать недостающую библиотеку. Конечно, так можно решить далеко не любую DLL-ошибку, поэтому ниже мы предлагаем ознакомиться с более конкретными случаями.
Ошибка d3dx9_43.dll, xinput1_2.dll, x3daudio1_7.dll, xrsound.dll и др.
Все ошибки, в названии которых можно увидеть «d3dx» , «xinput» , «dxgi» , «d3dcompiler» и «x3daudio» лечатся одним и тем же способом – воспользуйтесь веб-установщиком исполняемых библиотек DirectX .
Ошибка MSVCR120.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, runtime-x32.dll и др.
Ошибки с названием «MSVCR» или «RUNTIME» лечатся установкой библиотек Microsoft Visual C++ (узнать, какая именно библиотека нужна можно в системных требованиях).

В худшем случае ошибка 0xc000007b или «This application was unable to start correctly» связана с повреждёнными системными файлами ОС, а в лучшем – с драйверами видеокарт от Nvidia.

Самый очевидный и наиболее простой способ разобраться с ошибкой – переустановить драйверы для видеокарты, а после запустить игру от имени администратора.

После установки Dependency Walker 64bit , запускайте утилиту и переходите по следующему адресу: «View» «Full Patch» «.exe-файл проблемной игры» (в некоторых случаях после это появляется окно с ошибками, но на него не стоит обращать внимания, просто закройте окно). Переключитесь на раздел «Module» , крутите до конца ошибки, смотрите на значения в столбиках.
Ошибка DirectX в Project Zomboid
- Первым делом необходимо установить «чистую» версию драйвера вашей видеокарты (то есть не стоит сразу спешить устанавливать тот же GeForce Experience, ничего лишнего от AMD и аудио).
Ошибка «Недостаточно памяти»
Возникает ошибка, связанная с недостатком памяти, практически по десятку причин. Конечно, наиболее распространённые – это либо нехватка оперативной памяти «железа», либо маленький размер файла подкачки. В последнем случае, даже если вы ничего настраивали, всё запросто мог испортить сторонний софт или банальное отключение файла подкачки.
- Необходимо попробовать увеличить файл подкачки ( «Пуск» «Параметры системы» в строке наверху вводите «Производительность» выбирайте «Настройку представления и производительности системы» «Дополнительно» «Изменить» убираете галочку с функции «Автоматически выбирать…» выбираете размер ).

Звук в Project Zomboid отсутствует или пропадает в заставках
Чаще всего проблема связана с высоким звуковым разрешением в параметрах Windows, а именно – с частотой разрядности и дискретизации. Поэтому избавиться от проблемы можно лишь одним способом – понизить это разрешение.
- В трее нажмите ПКМ по значку динамика;
- В открывшемся меню необходимо выбрать пункт «Звуки» ;
- Следом необходимо выбрать устройство (это могут быть либо динамики, либо наушники) и нажать на «Свойства» ;
- Перейти на соседнюю вкладку «Дополнительно» ;
- Отыщите меню под названием «Формат по умолчанию» , чтобы задать значение, но оно должно быть ниже текущего;
- Нажмите «Применить» , откройте Project Zomboid и проверьте результат проделанной работы.
Проблему, которая связана с отсутствием звука в заставках, решить первым способом не получится, поэтому сделайте следующее:
- Вновь в трее ПКМ по значку динамика;
- В меню отыщите функцию под названием «Пространственный звук» , чтобы отключить;
- Остаётся лишь перезапустить Project Zomboid и проверить результат.
Project Zomboid вылетает в случайный момент или при запуске
Ниже приведено несколько простых способов решения проблемы, но нужно понимать, что вылеты могут быть связаны как с ошибками игры, так и с ошибками, связанными с чем-то определённым на компьютере. Поэтому некоторые случаи вылетов индивидуальны, а значит, если ни одно решение проблемы не помогло, следует написать об этом в комментариях и, возможно, мы поможем разобраться с проблемой.
