I picked up an Airport Express before they disappeared from the market, with the objective of using its audio-out to connect remotely to a HiFi.
My set-up is as follows:
- Time Capsule connected to cable modem. Internet + Wifi + time machine working properly.
- New, not yet hooked, Airport Express.
I gave up after many failed attempts using AirPort Utility (under High Sierra 10.13.6 on a MacBook Pro) to extend the network: «An unexpected error occurred. Try again.»
Connecting the Airport Express using Ethernet to its LAN line, I created an independent WiFi network. Now I can AirPlay form iOS just fine.
I can also AirPlay from the MacBook but only after I switch from the Time Capsule’s Wifi to the Airport Express’s Wifi.
How can I extend the network? I’ve tried resetting the unit by disconnecting power, holding the reset button for 10 seconds, and then reconnecting power while the reset button is still pressed; as well as switching Wi-Fi TCP/IP to «Link-Local Only» under «Configure IPv6».
I vaguely have the sense that it all worked nicely until I hit the «update firmware» red button for the Airport Express. Is there a way to regress the firmware?
Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply
ask a new question.
Hallo. Trying to connect a 2TB Time Capsule (MD032Z/A) with my Macbook Pro Retina via AirPort Utility (v. 6.3) and through the internet modem (TP-Link wireless modem/router) and keep getting an error message: «An unexpected error occurred. Try again.» Before the error message appears, AirPort Utility is «Reading previous settings…»
When I intitially bough the TC, I established a connection with the Macbook Pro without the use of the modem, just over wi-fi (I believe that a network was created for that) and managed to back up stuff. This network was exclusively connecting the computer and the TC and of course wouldn’t provide internet access.
As I realised that, I tried to connect the TC properly, that is over the internet modem, but to no avail… Also tried a factory reset of the TC a couple of times but it still does not connect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

AirPort Utility won’t let me change the router mode. In fact, I can’t even get to the menu shown in the picture you’ve posted. The button «Other Options», if this should be the way, is innactive…
You need to get in.. connect by ethernet dongle.. and make sure you have an IP from the TC..turn off wireless in the MBPr.
Then if you cannot get into the device do a factory reset.
See instructions on reset.. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
In simple terms.. hold in reset and THEN power on the TC.. keep holding reset until the front led flashes rapidly .. about 10sec. no data is lost from hard disk.
Select the TC in the airport utility
Info on the unit appears. Then click on edit.
That gets you to the manual setup screen..
One last question. For option 1 (all I need is using TC just to back up stuff from my MBPr automatically via Time Machine), should I connect the TP-Link modem/router to the WAN port of TC or to one of its 3 ethernet ports?
Thanks again
In bridge it makes no difference.. but by convention we use WAN to connect to modem.. it helps to keep things clear when you troubleshoot.. but when you bridge.. WAN port is assigned to LAN.
Spell checking is always fun here.. but I refuse to follow the US convention even if normal spell check is forced to US on the website.. my posts always have lots of spelling errors. !!!

Time Capsule «unexpected error» message
When users try to set up Airport Express, Airport Utility recognized it. But when they go to setup it provides an “An unexpected error occurred to try again” error message. It’s really frustrating one. But don’t worry about it. Here is the article I will share some solutions to get rid of this issue. Let get started.
Solution 1: Enable the IPv6
This issue might happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for the network interface.
- Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences and select Network.
- The lower-left corner of the lock icon appears, click it and enter the admin name and password.
- Select your network service in the list (WiFi or Ethernet) and press Advanced.
- Select TCP/IP tab.
- From the configure IPv6 popup menu, select Link-local only.
- Click OK and select Apply.
Device (Airport Express, AirPort Time Capsule, Airport Extreme) should now reappear in AirPort Utility.
Solution 2: Reset AirPort Express
Reset AirPort Express. If the Unexpected message reappears, reset the AirPort Express again.
Solution 3: Try the setup on iPad
Try the setup on iPad. Go to Settings -> WiFi. Under “Setup a new AirPort Base Station”, tap AirPort Express. Follow the prompts.
Solution 4: Connect your AirPort Express using the Ethernet cable
Users getting the same error when they try to connect it to the existing Airport Extreme wireless network.
Software: AirPort Utility 6.3.2 and OS X 10.9.5
Temporarily connect the AirPort Express to iMac with an Ethernet cable.
Other fixes :
- Disconnect the ethernet cable from iMac with the AirPort Express connected to the wireless hub with a cable.
- You might set the WiFi name to hidden. Changing the WiFi network unhidden will fix your problem. When you edit your Main device within AirPort Utility, go to Wireless tab -> Wireless Options settings. Find the settings marked “Create hidden network” uncheck the setup process.
- Check the firewall settings. Navigate to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall and uncheck “Block all incoming connections”.
Conclusion:
I hope above the solution may help to fix this AirPort Express Unexpected error. If you know any other solutions or doubts let me know through the comments section below. Thank you.
