Red Dead Redemption 2 is a well-optimized game by Rockstar Games. Yet players report that they keep facing Out of Memory errors. The error codes they face are “ERR_MEM_VIRTUAL_OUT_OF_MEMORY” and “ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM”.

Both of these RDR 2 Out Of Memory errors have similar reasons for happening. The majority of players report that this is because of incorrect page file size on their drives. Red Dead Redemption 2’s rendering APIs (DirectX 12 and Vulkan) also cause this issue. A simple swap between them has shown to fix the “Out Of Memory” error too. Another culprit for this error is in-game overlays. Users are facing these errors even if they have a high-end setup.

Source

Official updates have seemed to fix these Out Of Memory errors in Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few players. However, there are still many complaints that Rockstar Games isn’t addressing this issue properly.

Unlike Rockstar Games we have not abandoned you. We are providing multiple fixes to these persistent Red Dead Redemption Out Of Memory errors below. Try them out and at least one of them should work for you.

1. Update Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games has released some bug fixes and updates that might be able to solve the Out of Memory errors in Red Dead Redemption 2. So we recommend that you fully update RDR 2 and see if the errors still exist or not. You can do this through Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or Rockstar Launcher respectively. If the errors still exist then proceed to the next fix which works for a lot of players.

2. Increase Page File Size

Players reported that increasing the Paging File Size allotted to drives fixes the Out of Memory error in Red Dead Redemption 2. This allows RDR 2 more Virtual Memory to work with and hence results in increased stability.

User fixed out of memory error by increasing page file size.

If you are wondering how to allocate more RAM to Red Dead Redemption 2 then here’s how you can manually increase the Paging File Size for your drives.

  • Type in “View Advanced System Settings” in Windows Search and press Enter.
  • Under the Advanced tab click on Settings inside the Performance section.

system properties menu.

  • Once inside click on Change inside Virtual Memory under the Advanced tab.

performance options inside system properties.

  • Inside the Virtual Memory settings first, uncheck Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives.
  • Select the drive where Red Dead Redemption 2 is installed and below select “Custom Size:”
    • In our case, we are working with 8 GB of RAM.
    • Replace the 8 GB with how much RAM you have and calculate accordingly.
    • The formulas for the setting ideal paging file sizes recommended by Microsoft are:
      • 8 GB x 1000 x 1.5 = 12000 MB for Initial Size.
      • 8 GB x 1000 x 3.0 = 24000 MB for Maximum Size.
    • Type in your values accordingly and click Set.

3. Change Graphics API to DirectX 12 or Vulkan

Changing the graphics API may be a trivial step but according to sources it has fixed the (ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM) Out of Memory Error in RDR 2.

Different GPUs behave differently with the Graphics API selected by Red Dead Redemption 2. For some users switching to Vulkan fixes the errors. Others are able to fix it by switching it to DirectX 12.

Changing Graphics API to Vulkan fixed the out of memory error.

Multiple Users fixed the “Out of Memory” Error by switching to Vulkan
Changing Graphics API to DX 12 fixed the out of memory error.
The user fixed the “Out of Memory Error” by switching to DirectX 12

Depending upon if you’re able to launch your game or not this fix may be different for you. See both the options below to change this setting.

Option 1: If RDR 2 Crash During Gameplay

  • Launch Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Open Settings.
  • Open Graphics.
  • Scroll down to the Advanced Graphics section.
  • Set Advanced Settings to Unlocked.
  • Right below that select DirectX 12 in the Graphics API option.
  • If you’re on DirectX 12 already then switch to Vulkan.

RDR 2 in-game advanced graphics settings.

Option 2: If RDR 2 Crashes on Launch

  • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  • Open Documents.
  • Follow the path Documents > Rockstar Games > Red Dead Redemption 2 > Settings.
  • Inside the Settings folder open the file “system.xml”.

4. Clear DirectX 12 Cache

If you’re running Red Dead Redemption 2 with DirectX 12 API then we suggest clearing the cache of DirectX 12. Sources reported that clearing this cache worked as a temporary fix to the “err gfx d3d deferred mem out of memory rdr2” error in RDR 2.

  • Uncheck everything except “DirectX Shader Cache” and then click OK.
  • In the new pop-up window click “Delete Files”.

5. Disable Overlays

Red Dead Redemption 2 hates overlays for some reason. Multiple sources have confirmed that disabling in-game overlays like MSI Afterburner OSD, Steam overlay, Nvidia Geforce overlay, AMDs performance overlay, or Windows Game Bar fixes the “Out of Memory” Error.

There isn’t any clear connection between these overlays and the error that the game shows but it fixes this error nonetheless. What’s even weirder is that once the game is loaded in you can then enable these overlays again and they’ll work fine.

Disable MSI's OSD fixes the crash.
Disabling Geforce overlay fixes the crash also.

You can disable these overlays via their respective software. Then start the game to see if the “err gfx d3d deferred” or “err mem virtual out of memory” errors are fixed.

6. Update GPU Drivers

Updating the GPU drivers can always help sort out any bugs that are due to faulty drivers or instability with the game. You can download the latest GPU drivers from the official web pages of Nvidia, AMD, or Intel.

Alternatively, you can use Download Driver Easy and escape the hassle of manually finding which drivers you need. Driver Easy will not only update your GPU drivers but also any other drivers which need updating. This can help in fixing the “Out of Memory Error” in Red Dead Redemption 2.

7. Reinstalling Red Dead Redemption 2

We hope that the fixes shown above helped you solve the “err mem virtual out of memory” and “err gfx d3d deferred mem” out-of-memory errors in Red Dead Redemption 2. In case they didn’t then reinstalling the game is a good way to fix the game. Make sure to uninstall Red Dead Redemption 2 from whichever platform you’ve bought it on (Steam, Epic Games, or Rockstar Games Launcher) before you attempt a reinstall.

The old err_gfx_d3d_deferred_mem error

tl;dr: Short story: RDR2 installed on Rockstar platform (not STEAM) crashes at main menu under DX12; works fine under Vulkan. If I change from the game setting Vulkan to DX12 and restart game, game goes into a restart loop, looping the Shotgun scene logo and Disclaimer/EULA until I manually exit it from the Launcher. I need it to run undder DX12 because I added it as a non-steam game on Steam to be able to Invite Friends to watch. Under Vulkan, the game does not show in my status when I play it. (only for 10-15 seconds then is disappears) so I can’t invite to watch anyone.

I have RDR2 bought on RockstarGames platform since launch. Recently if I try to launch it with DX12 instead of Vulkan it crashes when it get to the main menu. Under Vulkan it works fine. I get the error «err_gfx_d3d_deferred_mem» Out of memory, minimum requirements bla bla. I have a AMD 7600x, 4090 TUF, 32GB RAM DDR 5. It worked just fine until a few days ago. The reason i want to run it under DX12 is that I added to Steam Library as a non steam game, to be able to invite friends to watch my game, and it worked for a while until recently. Under Vulkan, the game shows under Steam as I am playing it but by the time it loads is disappears and Steam shows like I am not playing any game, therefore I can’t sent watch my game invitations.
As I said, under DX12 this used to work and STEAM showed my status for the whole duration while playing it.

*WHY VULKAN DOES NOT LET THE GAME APPEAR UNDER STEAM WHEN PLAYING IT AND DX12 DOES?

Now, going back to my issue, game crashes when launched under DX12, no matter where it is launched from (steam or Rockstar launcher). I need to go in system.xml and change DX12 to Vulkan to be able to start the gamechange Also, when I change from Vulkan to DX12 from within the game settings and it asks for restart, when I press Restart, the game goes into a restart loop by keep playing the rockstar logo shotgun scene and the EULA Disclaimer text + one or two black and white/sepia photos from the loading process, over and over again until a I have to alt+tab and press exit game from Rockstar Launcher.

I tried: -updating my nvidia driver -reverting to older nvidia drivers -adding ignorepipelinecache in launch options -deleting the ‘SGA’ files under documents/rockstargames/rdr2/settings.

  • changing asyncComputeEnabled value from false to true -completely uninstalling the game and deleting all folders (apart from controls settings) and reinstalling it -checking game integrity files -launching the game without MSI Afterburner and RTSS in the background

I do not have any mods or overclocking

ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM crash fix

The game seems to show a new crash now, after the update which added DLSS support. Shows itself if you turn on/off DLSS, exit the game and launch it again — game’s crashing after some time in main menu (or in game if you’ve managed to load it before the crash happened).

(talkcontribs)

Just curious, can you still reproduce this error? I assume that this got fixed through a game update or GPU driver update?

Dgrdsv
(talkcontribs)

Haven’t played the game since last year so dunno.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Sad haha, just let me know if you ever run into this issue again  :)

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

As far as I know, that happens only when the API is set to D3D12, at least that was my case, regardless of the graphic configuration.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

I couldn’t reproduce it at least last month when running with the D3D12 API.

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

In my case to fix it I deleted the game configuration file, that reset the settings, including the API.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

And after that, did the D3D12 API work correctly for you? Are you sure the game was running on your dedicated GPU with its very latest drivers?

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

No, D3D12 is not working properly, and something tells me that it is not an isolated case, I have seen performance test videos and all of them have it in Vulkan API. So the best thing will be not to move that.

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

And I run it from my graphics card, the GTX 1650, it more than meets the minimum requirements, and it’s up to date.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Well, D3D12 renderer never had any issues for me. But at what overall settings and resolution did you try to run the game at? GTX 1650 is indeed above minimum spec, but if settings are set too high, possible problems could still be unavoidable. Especially because it has only 4 GB of VRAM. So, if running at 1440p for example at higher settings, I could easily see it happening that the game’s VRAM management can’t keep up and thus throws this error when it runs out of VRAM. I assume you also have no modifications installed right? I saw you btw undid my undo, I agree as the issue seems to be quite vague.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Especially think the freezing issue is simply caused by the game being severely limited by a weaker laptop-based CPU. I assume your GTX 1650 is indeed integrated into a laptop. Wouldn’t see much any other way that disabling two cores having access to the game could otherwise solve the problem. Likely the game runs into such a heavy CPU-limit, that hardly anything can function anymore, thus the game appears to be freezing. Actually doubting a bit if this is really the game’s fault and maybe not also a bit the weaker hardware. Did you check if your CPU meets the minimum requirements, because I suspect that may actually be the culprit here.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Btw, thanks for taking my feedback into account and improving your added issues during the undo of my undo  :)

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

I tell you, I run the game at 720, in all games I do, and I tried either in safe mode, low or high graphics, and it gave the same error. In my case I have a desktop pc, the GTX I installed relatively recently. When I play in the Vulkan API, regardless of the graphics settings, the game runs normally, but I still keep the resolution.

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

Of course, I don’t set the graphics configuration to full ultra, as it would consume much more video memory than what is available, so I simply set the best graphics configuration and make sure it doesn’t go over the limit.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Can’t sadly read your last message as I only speak Dutch and English, but at 720p, you shouldn’t be getting errors probably… So, lets indeed leave it in for now and see if more people come in with similair problems. But what is the CPU that’s in your PC?

Helderrocket
(talkcontribs)

Sorry about that, I already corrected it. Regarding your question, I have a Ryzen 3 3200g. According to what I have seen the graphics does not take full advantage of it even at 720p, but it is still functional.

Mrtnptrs
(talkcontribs)

Then I don’t have a clue what specific issue is really causing this within the D3D12 renderer, so lets leave this topic open  :)

hello,

have you any rdr2 mods ?
is it fresh rdr 2 install ?
what’s your antivirus ?
sorry for that question but did you “mod” your rtx 3090 to have cooler vram modules ?

btw, it’s working fine for me with the following setup

5900x
rtx 3090 FE
32 gb 3600
msi afterburner on

I do not have any mods installed.
It’s not a fresh install. (do you recommend that?)
I’m just using windows 10 built in AV
I did not mod my 3090. But I did install the “resizable bar” firmware update.
I tried Dark Souls 3 and it’s hooked correctly

is it the rockstar version ? steam version ? epic version ? try to verify games files integrity ?
maybe if you have fast internet try to reinstall completely the game.
try different nvidia driver ?

i’m not specialist, but right now the game is working fine for me with 461.92 nvidia drivers.

i dont know where your issue is coming from, but maybe by reinstalling the game that will fix it ? who knows, it’s weird that the game is saying you run out of vram with 24 gb of it…

I’m using the epic version.

Thanks for the link but it didn’t fix my issue.

The game does work fine in non Vorpx mode. I was also able to play Cyberpunk in Vorpx without issue.

Yeah, I realize that vram should not be a problem. I’m swimming in it! :P

I’m using the 466.11 Nvidia driver. Maybe I’ll try the same one you are using if you think it may help. If that doesn’t work I’ll download it again. Thanks!

maybe you are running rdr 2 in vulkan mode ? you must run it in dx12 mode for vorpx.

#202267

Sounds like some weird conflict. Please double and triple and check whether there really are no other overlays active, e.g. from some chat/messenger app. Just in case.

Deleting the game’s D3D12 pipeline cache files is also worth a try. Navigate to [Documents]Rockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings and delete the two files starting with sga_win32_60.

Afterwards first start the game with vorpX while these cache files don’t exist. If that does not help, start the game without vorpX and load a savegame, so that it recreates the cache file and then try again with vorpX.

If any of this helps with your issue, it would great if you could let me know.

Apr 28, 2021 at 8:37pm

#202285

I understand it needs to be run in DX12. I have double-checked the system.xml file and it’s set to DX12. I also deleted the DirectX cache on every drive.

I uninstalled Gforce Experience and it didn’t make a difference. The only other programs that I have running are steam VR. No chat programs, etc. I deleted the sga_win32_60 files many times now and a few times deleted all the files in that directory.

The only thing I haven’t tried was deleting the whole game and redownloading it. Looks like that may be the next step.

I want to point out that Vorpx has worked in the other games I tried. Cyberpunk and Dark Souls 3 loaded without issue. It’s also worth noting that I think this program is absolutely amazing and already worth the money. I just really wanted to try RDR2.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the Resizable Bar update? I have no idea.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

I get this one a LOT too. About 75% of the time, first run, it will give me this error.
Its made RDR2 pretty much unplayable at this point for me. However, I’m not sure if its 100% the fault of VorpX or not. I got it once without VorpX. There are other mentions of this error on the web, but nothing that has helped figure out what it is. I assumed perhaps vorpX was taking up addition reserved memory or something. And I’m definitely not running out of memory.
I tried all the above stuff as well.
I got tired of this error, so I don’t play anymore, but just thought I’d mention it so you don’t feel alone.

The reinstall didn’t work either. I also tried loading the game without Vorpx, created a new save game, then loaded with Vorpx as Ralf suggested. Still nothing.

Would be great if both of you could send a trouble shoot data archive to support at vorpx com. Considering that the game is supported practically since day one and the forum isn’t exactly overflowing with reports of this issue, it’s probably some weird and rare conflict. With a bit of luck cross checking both your system configurations can give some hint.

@ dborosov: as usual please first and foremost remove any mods and check whether the issue also occurs without. Just as with your keyboard mod last time script hook mods of any kind can cause unpredictable behavior since they may hook into functions that vorpX also hooks.

I’d just like to say I have just purchased VorpX specifically for RDR2 and get the exact same error on first run.

I’ve tried clearing DX cache and made sure I’m running in DX12 mode no joy.

System specs are 5800X, 32GB RAM, RTX 3080 so shouldnt be a problem.

Would really like a resolution on this as it’s the sole purpose I bought the software.

Thanks

Okay- this is a shot in the dark, but I just resolved a similar problem where it was giving me a similar error message for another game recently. This is -not- a solution endorsed by Vorpx, I want to make that clear; but, it is a rather simple and typical thing to change in Windows and ‘revert’ if you desire.

It sounds like the mix of your applications is making you effectively not have enough RAM for what youre trying to do. There is a potential fix we can go over, as long as you have a bit of hard drive space available.

So there is this thing called Paging File Size. Its basically, to my understanding, a ‘weak’ form of RAM you can utilize Hard Drive space with to give you a little extra memory, which might get you through these error messages.

this is how to access it and change it in Windows 10:

1.Go to start bar and type this in
advanced system settings

2.Select advanced system settings once it pops up.

3. You should now be in a Window called “System Properties” and in the “Advanced” tab. There should be a section called “Performance”, click “settings” under the “Performance” section.

4. Now youre in the window “Performance Options”; click the “Advanced” tab.

5. Now in the “advanced” tab should be a section for “Virtual Memory”, click “change”.

6. Now youre in a window called “Virtual Memory”. 99% of the time it is -fine- and correct to just let Windows keep these settings as they are, but, in some extreme cases, helping it out with some extra gigs of Hard Drive space may get a program running that is eating alot of resources (for instance, an advanced game like RDR2 + VR + Background tasks + Vorpx)

7. Select the option “Custom Size” – and go ahead and go a little wild with it. If you have 20 gigs free, set it to “Initial Size” of “3000”; “Maximum Size” of “15000”.

8. Make sure “custom size” is selected with your new numbers, (they dont have to match exactly what I put, but those numbers should let you find out whether or not this is your problem)… so Select “Set” after entering your values, then OK. Select Ok in all the windows you can and close out of them.

9. You may have to restart your computer, this -will- take up Hard Drive space, so if you want that space back, just follow this guide and enter lower numbers or tell the System to take care of it, this isn’t harmful, just a way to give some extra ‘slow’ memory to your PC.

Hope this helps, but Ive used it to fix a few memory issues in the past. Good luck.

Heres a link with some pics if it helps.
