While testing some remote DC’s, «repadmin /replsummary» ended with an error of
Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information:
58 - mydc1.mydomain.com
58 - mydc2.mydomain.com
Information for «Source DSA» for mydc1 and mydc2 both show up with 0 fails/errors; the information is lacking under Destination DSA. This domain controller I ran the command on (remotedc1) can see mydc1 and mydc2.
Pinging from remotedc1 to mydc2 and mydc1 shows an average time of 43ms…
What causes this kind of error?

After some investigation, I found that a set of firewall rules was completely blocking communication between the site in question and the remote site, which happened to be the FSMO roles holder. Without the ability to talk to the FSMO masters, things started getting weird.
So, make sure if you run into this error that you double and triple-check that your firewall rules are not blocking communication between your domain controllers.
In our case, we were completely blocking all communication to the DC, so the non-smart-ass answer to your query @Iain is «all of them.» Sorry I can’t be more specific!

I have one parent domain and 4 child domains. When I run repadmin /replsummary.. I get the below:
Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information:
58 — xxxxxx
8341 — xxxxxx
What do these errors codes 58 and 8341 mean and what is resolution to these errors?

Question

Hi all,
We have isolated one DC from parent and child domain each to testing purpose
ABC-P = Parent DC
xyz-C = child DC
I did metadata cleanup on both the DCs and after that i ran repadmin /replsum
and in ABC-P i am getting the correct results but in xyz-C i get the error
Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information — 58 (Parent DCs) name
I need to know how to proceed further.
Hint — from parent DC i am able to ping both the ipaddress and host of child dc but
Child DC — only ipaddress of parent is getting pinged and if we pinged with host name gives error — Could not find the host
and one more information — when doing metadata from child DC using the ntdsutil, and select parent domain and parent site and list server in site — it shows all the parent dcs which i removed by metadata clean up from parent
Please advise
Aamir

Happy Friday sysadmin,
We are working on migrating our AD from FRS to DFS. We have a site in VA and one in AL and haven’t had any issues when it comes to AD replication but when I run repadmin /replsum, I get the following output:
Source DSA largest delta fails/total %% error AL-DC2 09m:56s 0 / 5 0 VA-DC1 09m:56s 0 / 5 0 VA-DC2 04m:46s 0 / 5 0
Destination DSA largest delta fails/total %% error VA-DC1 05m:28s 0 / 5 0 VA-DC2 10m:38s 0 / 10 0
Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication info rmation: 58 — AL-DC1.domain.xxxx 58 — AL-DC2.domain.xxxx
I have Googled the crap out of this but none of the solutions seem to work. The AL and VA DC’s can both resolve each other via IP or FQDN, so it seems DNS is setup properly.
When I did the dfsrmig /setmigrationstate 1, it actually worked and now the AD is set to Prepared so am I missing something here? Replsum is saying that replication has errors yet it seems to be working fine?
Any help would be awesome cause I am completely stuck.
edit: Forgot to mention that if I run repadmin /replsum from the AL DC’s, they give the same output as above except the 58 errors are for the VA DC’s.
1. Error code 58 while executing command – repadmin /replsum /bysrc /bydest
After running command ” repadmin /replsum /bysrc /bydest” to check replication status in one of the domain I encountered error code – 58 and the actual output as follows:
Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information:
58 – FQDN name of Domain Controller.
I have tried to search for this error code on numerous sites but could not get much information. I executed below command in order to understand why this error is occurring.
net helpmsg 58
Output as below:
It merely says that server cannot perform the requested operation which in this case is running command – repadmin /replsum /bysrc /bydest.
This error went away without performing any troubleshooting steps on next day but it does occur on some of the domain controllers but goes away next day. I haven’t found any solution to this problem except that I found this has been experienced by some other users and it has been discussed widely on Windows Server Forums ( here & here).
2. Commands to execute when replication reports shows errors.
I will list out some of the commands which can be executed to deep dive more on the issue and of course resolve the issue of replication.
a. Verify Domain Controllers Are in Sync
repadmin /showchanges <DestinationDC’s FQDN><SourceDCGUID><NamingContext>
b.Replication Status of Domain Controllers
repadmin /replsum
Use wildcard character to display specific domain controller status
repadmin /replsum dc1*
c. Changes which have not been replicated between Two Domain Controllers
repadmin /showchanges <DC1Name><DC2GUID><NamingContextDN>
repadmin /showchanges <DC2Name><DC1GUID><NamingContextDN>
d. Force Replication between 2 DCs.
repadmin /replicate <DC1><DC2><NamingContextDN>
e.Verify Replication Problems
dcdiag /test:replications
repadmin /showrepl /errorsonly
