Introduction

This system error describes a failure of the 5-volt voltage regulator on the carriage board. When one of the printheads has failed, it appears to interfere with the energy calibration for another printhead. This error condition may only appear while initializing the printer or after doing a printhead replacement. Use the information below to determine the cause of the failure and perform the necessary troubleshooting steps to resolve.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Following initialization, use the Down Arrow key to scroll to the Ink system menu icon and press Enter.

    note:

    If the error code appears during initialization press the Enter key to allow printer to complete the rest of the initialization process.

  3. Scroll to Replace Printheads and press Enter.

  4. The printer should now move the carriage/printheads to an accessible position.

  5. Open the top cover.

  6. Remove all four printheads from the carriage.

  7. Turn the printer off using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.

  8. Turn the printer on.

  9. Following initialization, insert one printhead starting with the black printhead.

  10. Determine whether or not the printer accepts the printhead.

  11. Turn the printer off and repeat steps 7-10 for each of the four printheads to determine which printhead is being reported as bad.

  12. Replace the suspected printhead(s) with new one(s) as needed.

  13. If the error appears following replacement of all suspected printheads, contact HP.

    This System Error appeared with Firmware revision A.01.06 and describes a failure of the 5-volt voltage regulator on the carriage board. When one of the printheads has failed, it appears to interfere with the energy calibration for another printhead. This error condition may only appear while initializing the printer or after doing a printhead replacement. Probable causes are failing printhead(s) or the 5-volt voltage regulator on the carriage board has declared a fault condition.
    Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
    NOTE: If the printer is installed on a Multi-Roll feeder accessory, some Multi-Roll disassembly is required to gain access to the printer. Instructions for Multi-Roll disassembly are listed at the bottom of this document for reference.
    NOTE: The fuse being sent should be used if a poor Trailing cable connection or a shorted Trailing cable blows the fuse on the Electronics module. Make sure to properly connect the Trailing cable or replace a shorted Trailing cable before installing the new fuse.
    If any of the troubleshooting steps listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

Turn the printer on.

Following initialization, use the Down Arrow key to scroll to the Ink system icon and press Enter .

    NOTE: If the error code appears during initialization press the Enter key to allow printer to complete the rest of the initializing process.

Scroll to Replace Printheads and press Enter .

The printer should now move the carriage/printheads to an accessible position.

Remove all four printheads from the carriage.

    NOTE: Ensure all printheads are not out of warranty (more than 700cc’s of ink consumed for each printhead, or the end of the warranty date has been exceeded). If a printhead is out of warranty, the customer must replace the printhead with a new one.

Turn the printer off using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.

Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, clean the electrical contacts on the printheads and the carriage.

Re-seat all printheads back into the carriage, and turn the printer on. If the error persists, continue with the remaining steps.

Access the printheads as shown in steps 1-3 above.

When printheads are accessible, turn the printer off using the main power switch.

Remove all four printheads from the carriage.

Turn the printer on.

Following initialization, insert one printhead starting with the black printhead.

Determine whether or not the printer accepts the printhead.

Turn the printer off and repeat steps 14-17 for each of the four printheads to determine which printhead is being reported as bad. Replace the suspected printhead(s) with new one(s) as needed.

If the error appears following replacement of all suspected printheads, continue with the remaining steps.

Turn the printer off and remove the power cable from the back of the printer.

Following replacement of the carriage and trailing cable, perform the following calibrations: 2. Line Sensor, 3. Service Station, 4. Roller Mark Position, 6. Color to Color, 8. Pen Alignment, and the Carriage Height Calibration (instructions for entering Service calibrations listed below).

    NOTE: Printer menu mode must be set to Full to access the Service Tests submenu. To verify, at the Ready prompt, scroll to the PRINTER SETUP icon, and press Enter . Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu and press Enter . Using the Arrow keys scroll to Menu Mode =. Select Full (if needed) and press the Back key to return to the main menu.

Turn the printer on and allow initialization to complete.

At the Ready prompt, scroll to the Printer Setup icon and press Enter .

Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities, and press Enter .

Once in Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the Enter key simultaneously. You will now be in the Service Tools menu.

Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter .

Scroll to the needed Service Calibration and press Enter .

Follow instructions displayed on the front-panel to complete the selected calibration.

When calibration is finished, stay in Service mode to perform any additional calibrations (if required).

When all required calibrations are complete, return to the main Status display using the Back key.

Turn the printer off.

Turn the printer on, and attempt to verify functionality.

    Only remove the corresponding side cover of the Multi-Roll that requires maintenance. For example, only remove the right side cover of Multi-Roll if only the right end cover of the printer requires removal to complete the necessary service. Follow the steps listed below to gain access to the printer to complete the necessary service.
    NOTE: Only one CE needs to be dispatched to perform service on a 1000 Series printer attached to a Multi-Roll feeder.

    WARNING:Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

Open the left door of the Multi-Roll feeder.

Loosen the two screws that secure the left door to the Multi-Roll feeder.

Remove the left door.

    CAUTION:Be careful not to break the door when removing it.

Remove the two star screws (Orange) that secure the Front top-cover to the Multi-Roll feeder.

Remove the Multi-Roll feeder top cover.

Remove six T-20 screws that secure the left Side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

Remove the seven T-20 screws that secure the left side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.

    WARNING:Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

Remove the Right door and Front top cover from the Multi-Roll feeder (follow steps 1 through 5 of the previous section and remove the right door instead of the left).

Remove Six T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

Open the Rear Top cover.

In researching this error, it seems to be a faulty print head. However, with this error on the screen, the machine is dead in the water. How do you determine which print head is faulty with this meassage on the screen?
This is an APA regulation failure. Not a good error. First you need to remove all the printheads and clean the contacts on the printheads and the contacts on the flex connector inside the carriage assembly that mate with the contacts on printheads. If no joy you need to perform the electronics test contained in the service manual link below. If still no joy then you need to replace all the printheads.

    This System Error appeared with Firmware revision A.01.06 and describes a failure of the 5-volt voltage regulator on the carriage board. When one of the printheads has failed, it appears to interfere with the energy calibration for another printhead. This error condition may only appear while initializing the printer or after doing a printhead replacement. Probable causes are failing printhead(s) or the 5-volt voltage regulator on the carriage board has declared a fault condition.
    Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
    NOTE: If the printer is installed on a Multi-Roll feeder accessory, some Multi-Roll disassembly is required to gain access to the printer. Instructions for Multi-Roll disassembly are listed at the bottom of this document for reference.
    NOTE: The fuse being sent should be used if a poor Trailing cable connection or a shorted Trailing cable blows the fuse on the Electronics module. Make sure to properly connect the Trailing cable or replace a shorted Trailing cable before installing the new fuse.
    If any of the troubleshooting steps listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

Turn the printer on.

Following initialization, use the Down Arrow key to scroll to the Ink system icon and press Enter .

    NOTE: If the error code appears during initialization press the Enter key to allow printer to complete the rest of the initializing process.

Scroll to Replace Printheads and press Enter .

The printer should now move the carriage/printheads to an accessible position.

Remove all four printheads from the carriage.

    NOTE: Ensure all printheads are not out of warranty (more than 700cc’s of ink consumed for each printhead, or the end of the warranty date has been exceeded). If a printhead is out of warranty, the customer must replace the printhead with a new one.

Turn the printer off using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.

Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, clean the electrical contacts on the printheads and the carriage.

Re-seat all printheads back into the carriage, and turn the printer on. If the error persists, continue with the remaining steps.

Access the printheads as shown in steps 1-3 above.

When printheads are accessible, turn the printer off using the main power switch.

Remove all four printheads from the carriage.

Turn the printer on.

Following initialization, insert one printhead starting with the black printhead.

Determine whether or not the printer accepts the printhead.

Turn the printer off and repeat steps 14-17 for each of the four printheads to determine which printhead is being reported as bad. Replace the suspected printhead(s) with new one(s) as needed.

If the error appears following replacement of all suspected printheads, continue with the remaining steps.

Turn the printer off and remove the power cable from the back of the printer.

Following replacement of the carriage and trailing cable, perform the following calibrations: 2. Line Sensor, 3. Service Station, 4. Roller Mark Position, 6. Color to Color, 8. Pen Alignment, and the Carriage Height Calibration (instructions for entering Service calibrations listed below).

    NOTE: Printer menu mode must be set to Full to access the Service Tests submenu. To verify, at the Ready prompt, scroll to the PRINTER SETUP icon, and press Enter . Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu and press Enter . Using the Arrow keys scroll to Menu Mode =. Select Full (if needed) and press the Back key to return to the main menu.

Turn the printer on and allow initialization to complete.

At the Ready prompt, scroll to the Printer Setup icon and press Enter .

Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities, and press Enter .

Once in Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the Enter key simultaneously. You will now be in the Service Tools menu.

Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter .

Scroll to the needed Service Calibration and press Enter .

Follow instructions displayed on the front-panel to complete the selected calibration.

When calibration is finished, stay in Service mode to perform any additional calibrations (if required).

When all required calibrations are complete, return to the main Status display using the Back key.

Turn the printer off.

Turn the printer on, and attempt to verify functionality.

    Only remove the corresponding side cover of the Multi-Roll that requires maintenance. For example, only remove the right side cover of Multi-Roll if only the right end cover of the printer requires removal to complete the necessary service. Follow the steps listed below to gain access to the printer to complete the necessary service.
    NOTE: Only one CE needs to be dispatched to perform service on a 1000 Series printer attached to a Multi-Roll feeder.

    WARNING:Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

Open the left door of the Multi-Roll feeder.

Loosen the two screws that secure the left door to the Multi-Roll feeder.

Remove the left door.

    CAUTION:Be careful not to break the door when removing it.

Remove the two star screws (Orange) that secure the Front top-cover to the Multi-Roll feeder.

Remove the Multi-Roll feeder top cover.

Remove six T-20 screws that secure the left Side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

Remove the seven T-20 screws that secure the left side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.

    WARNING:Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

Remove the Right door and Front top cover from the Multi-Roll feeder (follow steps 1 through 5 of the previous section and remove the right door instead of the left).

Remove Six T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

Remove nine T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.

Open the Rear Top cover.

Release the cable that is attached to the top of the right side cover.

    Follow the procedures listed above in reverse order.
