Дорогие друзья, при попытке запустить на ноутбуке со встроенной видеокартой (если говорить более правильно — интегрированное в процессор Intel графическое ядро) вы можете ловить весьма неприятную ошибку вне зависимости от версии игры — assert_fatal. Это стандартная для «Возмездия» ошибка, таким образом игра ругается на встроенную графику, и ей глубоко всё равно даже в том случае, когда вы запускаете игру на дискретной видеокарте. Когда игрушка видит наличие встроенной графики, она просто крашится и всё. Я в своё время бился над этой проблемой, выставлял совместимости, разные патчи пробовал, но всё было тщетно. Тогда я глубже залез в интернет и на сайте ГОГ один парень на английском языке описал свое простое и гениальное решение проблемы — Возмездие можно легко запустить на виртуальной машине с установленной Ubuntu через программу Wine, которая позволяет запускать приложения для винды на линуксовских осях. Парень советовал VirtualBox от Oracle, и я, кончено же, сначала выбрал эту программу. Установив Убунту 19.04, я также установил wine уже в гостевой ОС, подключил образ диска с антологией серии УФО и ХСОМ от RG ReCoding, через вайн запустил программу установки и смог поставить русскую версию Возмездия 1.3. Она без проблем запустилась (через скачанную на гостевую ос прогу winetricks), но ФПС меня не радовал. Даже с включенной виртуализацией мне выдавало 5-15 фпс, что для фаната играбельно, но очень утомляет. В итоге я решил проделать все аналогичные действия на VMware Workstation Pro и установленной гостевой lubuntu 19.04 — и вы не поверите: она летает, как будто ее запустили в реальной, а не виртуальной среде. Стабильно высокий фпс. Если у вас на винде не запускается Возмездие, а играть хочется — то вперед, не отчаивайтесь. Виртуальная машина и лубунту — ваше решение. VMware прекрасно работает даже на моем слабеньком ноутбуке с i3 5005u и 8 ГБ RAM, если у вас мощное железо — можете пробовать и Виртуал Бокс от Оракл, но я не вижу смысла, так как производительность намного ниже. Главное — наличие прямых рук и немного усердия, игра запустится на любом ноутбуке с оперативной памятью от 4 ГБ (пробуйте и 2) и процессором не слабее моего (2 ГГц, 2 ядра, 4 потока)

Я не уверен, что это вообще кто-то прочитает и кто-то этим заинтересуется, потому я решил не писать подробный мануал, но, поскольку, никто в русском сегменте интернета не поднял эту тему и не описывал конкретное решение проблемы, то молчать я тоже не мог:) Если будет на то желание и что-то будет непонятно — то обязательно распишу подробный пошаговый мануал.

The first step to resolve an issue / bug is to make sure that the game is of latest version (v1.7) and without mods.

Software Bugs[]

Software bugs prevents or makes it difficult to play the game normally, for example launch error, load error, graphic error, sound error etc.

Assert fatal wglchoosepixelformatAKB[]

Problem:
When starting or loading actual game (past the main menu), game reports Assert_fatal file:C:workdirSrcliblgviewcoreBasicOglWnd.cpp line:203 wglchoosepixelformatAKB() failed! and terminate.

Solution:

1. Do not use Intel HD graphic. Installing a graphic card or run it on a computer with graphic card. Or,
2. Install Linux and launch the game using WINE, which have worked around this bug. (Running a Linux virtual machine from Windows works just fine) No known solution on Windows.

OpenAL32.dll missing[]

Problem:
When starting the game, game reports «The program can’t start because OpenAL32.dll is missing from your computer» and terminate.

Solution:

1. Reinstall the game and make sure it is up to date. Or,
2. Under game folder, find OpenAL32._dll and rename it to OpenAL32.dll.

Note: It is tempting to download dll from the Internet, but it is bad habit and is risky.

VFS Error[]

Problem:
Game reports a uncompress or corruption error in a vfs file When launching the game, entering tactical mission, or loading strategic screen.

Solution:

1. A mod is corrupted. Delete the mods one by one until the game can start. Or,
2. A game data file is corrupted. Reinstall the game and make sure it is up to date.

Screen Resolution too Low[]

Problem:
Screen is too small, part of game screen is not accessible, e.g. cannot escape from option screen.

Solution:
Exit game, use command line options to launch it in non-fullscreen mode.
With the game running in Windows mode, maximise it to have it scale down, then pick a lower screen resolution in option screen. Once it is done you can update the command line options and restart game in fullscreen, or keep playing in windowed mode.

Corrupted Ground Textures[]

Problem:
Most ground (including cliffs) is in black or in some weird colour.

Solutions:

1. In the option screen, disable ground bump maps (require latest game patch). Or,
2. In the option screen, set shader quality to low.

Green Area Overlays[]

Problem:
Green area overlays start showing up in all tactical missions.

Solution:
Press Alt+A to toggle area highlight.

Flying Dialogs[]

Problem:
People’s dialogs are skipped quickly, without pausing.

Solution:

1. Exit game. In Control Panel > Sound, check that the default sound device is enabled and working properly. Or,
2. Disable speech of these notices. Meetings still auto-skip but can be reviewed from the library.

Legs only Characters[]

Problem:
The upper body of characters disappear, leaving only legs.
Unpausing the game cause the game to hangs for a while, before pausing again.

Solution:

1. Unpause the game a few times, and the game should correct itself. Or,
2. Save game, quit game and restart, and load the game. Or,
3. Avoid crouching and standing up in real time, problem does not happens if commands were issued paused.

Game Play Bugs[]

Game play bugs are bugs that prevent you from winning the game, instead of preventing you from playing the game.

The following bugs and solutions only apply to vanilla game.
Many mods are created before latest patches and haven’t been upgraded, and may introduce weird problems that cannot be fixed in game.

Trade is limiting resource[]

Problem:
A certain level of resource is required to build e.g. Warehouse or advanced equipments, but it is impossible because the resource is being traded out, lowering its level.

Solution:

1. Break treaty and attack the faction, this is the only way to cancels trade deals with them. Or,
2. Request resources from another faction, which may gives you what you want (typically at cost of another resource). Or,
3. Keep on expanding in other directions, and surround other factions to limit their expansion. Eventually you should get enough resources.

Need Capture Mission[]

Problem:
A live capture is needed to complete a critical research.

Solution:
Main base mission will never be a capture mission, so let the faction occupies one of your territories.
This will gives the game a new space to create a new mission, potentially a capture mission.
You may need to repeat it a few times, perhaps with the help of save and load, to get the required capture.

Alternatively, the capture may have already been undertaken, and you just need other technologies or facilities to do the research.

Cannot Research[]

Problem:
A research is needed, but it is unavailable, typically because an important item or prerequisites cannot be acquired due to other game bugs.

Solution:

1. If the missing requirement is an item (e.g. Acid Grenade), equip it and then unequip it from a team member,
2. If that doesn’t work, use cheats to give yourself the item(s), even if you already have it. (Check technology page to see the requirements for each tech.)
3. Use the cheat to get all technologies. This will advanced most game plot and should only be used as a last resort.

Cannot Defeat Someone[]

Problem:
Some enemies seem to be invulnerable (very low damage or hit rate).

Solution:

1. Try a different approach. Reticulans never fared well against bullets. Psi attacks cannot hurt your robots. Martians are vulnerable to melee. Rollers can be stopped with mines and superior firepower e.g. dual pistols. Grenades for alchemists. Laser for Matriarch. Or,
2. Retreat a bit to buy some time for research and production of new equipments especially weapons. This can take a while so mind that you do not lost necessary resources.
3. Or set up a minefield/TNT and lead them there. Or throw grenades in a mass. There’s no escaping splash damage with just dodge. And even supernatural running speed still get them caught in the tail end of an explosion.

Cannot Win Game[]

Problem:
When beastmen’s main base is assaulted, the mission soon says that you are outnumbered and must retreat.

Solution:
You must undertake both moon missions and research  Moons Data Analysis.
This will enables the main gate mission at Elysium and convince Earth to launch the second spaceship, allowing you to overcome beastmen’s superior number.

Windows

Problem	Symptoms	Solution
Missing DLLs	You might come into trouble when you try to start Template:Path. The binary won’t be able to load some DLLs that are needed.	Put them in the root directory of your UFO:AI checkout — they are located in the Template:Path dir.
Can’t Register Window Class	You get the error «Couldn’t register window class».	Install your 3D Graphic card drivers — or update to the latest version
Vista Graphics Problems	The game doesn’t even start on a Vista system.	Deactivate Aero (right click on desktop/personalize(sic)/theme/windows classic). Make sure you don’t use the Microsoft drivers for your gfx-card. Install the latest official vendor drivers.
Vista Full Screen Problems	The game quits unexpectedly when you switch to full screen under Vista.	Try setting full screen in Template:Path: set vid_fullscreen «1».
Vista Resolution Switching Problems	The game quits unexpectedly when you switch screen resolutions under Vista (and doesn’t save the new resolution).	No known solution. Setting the resolution in the Template:Path doesn’t work. It still loads at the default 1024×768. This probably will require a bug fix.
Slow with NVIDIA	The game runs very slow on PCI-E NVIDIA based Windows XP Computers	Try to turn off «Threaded optimization» in the NVIDIA control panel. You can find the option on the «Manage 3D Settings» page.
Fancy Graphics Don’t Work	You can’t use fancy graphic settings, even though you have the latest hardware.	NVIDIA Control Panel might apply Quake2 or UFO Afterlight profiles to UFO:AI, too — deactivate this. Maybe there is something like that for ATI/AMD users, too.

Linux

Problem	Symptoms	Solution
(get)text issues in the GUI	You see a lot of the text in the GUI that looks like «b_radar_txt».	Try running the game with the option «+set s_language en_US». This issue and work-around was reported on a Gentoo Linux with LINGUAS stripped down.
Slow Performance	The game runs slowly.	Make sure to use the latest drivers for your graphic card — for ATI and NVIDIA only the closed source drivers may work. Intel cards maybe need texture compression enabled. Also try to reduce the texture resolution in the video options menu. If you get an error like «[driAllocateTexture:636] unable to allocate texture» try deactivating the option Multitexturing in the Video-configs of the game. It seems you need to restart the game to make these changes take effect. Intel card owners should install the package libgl1-mesa-dri to get higher framerates.
Black Screen/Textures	You use an Intel card and see black textures or a black screen.	Ensure that «Enable ST3C texture compression even if software support is not available» is set to NO in driconf (driconf -> image quality).

Mac OS X

Problem	Symptoms	Solution
No Text	There is no text when starting new missions, development screens, etc.	Your language hasn’t been set. Go to the main menu / Options / Game and set a language.
Broken Scrolling	You can’t scroll in all directions.	You cannot have the game resolution the same as the screen resolution in windowed mode. This causes the window to be slightly larger than the screen size. Go to the main menu, Video and either decrease the screen resolution or tick the full screen box.

System Independent

Problem	Symptoms	Solution
Out-of-Date Graphics Card Drivers	The game crashes.	Make sure that you have your latest 3D graphics card drivers installed.
ATI Card Issues	You are using an ATI video card and the geoscape is not visible and/or the battlescape rendering is broken.	Deactivate the GLSL shaders.

Be sure to update your graphics card drivers and other software

Before letting out all of your bad feelings toward development team, do not forget to go to the official website of your graphics card manufacturer and download the latest drivers. There are often specially prepared optimized drivers for specific game. You can also try to install a past versions of the driver if the problem is not solved by installing the current version.
It is important to remember that only the final version of the video card driver must be loaded – try not to use the beta version, since they can have some terrible bugs.

Do not also forget that for good game operation you may need to install the latest version DirectX, which can be found and downloaded from official Microsoft website.

UFO: Afterlight not starting

Many of the problems with games launching happen because of improper installation. Check, if there was any error during installation, try deleting the game and run the installer again, but before install don’t forget to disable antivirus – it may often mistakenly delete files during installation process. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with a game should contain only Latin characters and numbers.

You also have to check whether there is enough space on the HDD for installation. You can also try to run the game as an administrator in compatibility mode with different versions of Windows.

UFO: Afterlight crashes. Low FPS. Friezes. Hangs

Your first solution to this problem install new drivers for a video card. This action can drastically rise game FPS. Also, check the CPU and memory utilization in the Task Manager (opened by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE). If before starting the game you can see that some process consumes too many resources — turn off the program or simply remove this process from Task Manager.

Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First – turn off anti-aliasing and try to lower the setting, responsible for post-processing. Many of them consume a lot of resources and switching them off will greatly enhance the performance, and not greatly affect the quality of the picture.

UFO: Afterlight crashes to the desktop

If UFO: Afterlight often crashes to the desktop, try to reduce quality of the graphics. It is possible that your PC just does not have enough performance and the game may not work correctly. Also, it is worth to check out for updates — most of today’s games have the automatic patches installation system on startup if internet connection is available. Check to see whether this option is turned off in the settings and switch it on if necessary.

Black of black screen in the UFO: Afterlight

The most common issue with black screen is a problem with your GPU. Check to see if your video card meets the minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is the result of a lack of CPU performance.

If everything is fine with your hardware and it satisfies the minimum requirements, try to switch to another window (ALT + TAB), and then return to the game screen.

UFO: Afterlight is not installed. Installation hangs

First of all, check that you have enough space on the HDD for installation. Remember that to work properly installer requires the declared volume of space, plus 1-2 GB of additional free space on the system drive. In general, remember this rule – you must always have at least 2 gigabytes of free space on your system drive (usually it’s disk C) for temporary files. Otherwise, the games and the other software may not work correctly or even refuse to start.

Problems with the installation may also be due to the lack of an internet connection or it’s instability. Also, do not forget to stop the antivirus for the time game installation – sometimes it interferes with the correct file copy, or delete files by mistake, mistakenly believing they are viruses.

Saves not working in UFO: Afterlight

By analogy with the previous solution, check for free space on HDD — both on where the game is installed, and the system drive. Often your saves are stored in a folder of documents, which is separate from the game itself.

Controls not working in UFO: Afterlight

Sometimes the controls in game do not work because of the simultaneous connection of multiple input devices. Try disabling gamepad, or, if for some reason, you have two connected keyboards or mouses, leave only one pair of devices. If your gamepad does not work, remember — the games usually officially support only native Xbox controllers. If your controller is defined in system differently — try using software that emulates the Xbox gamepad (eg, x360ce — step by step manual can be found here).

No sound in UFO: Afterlight

Check if the sound works in other programs. Then check to see if the sound is turned off in the settings of the game, and whether there is correct audio playback device selected, which is connected your speakers or headset. After this check volumes in system mixer, it can also be turned off there.
