An update.
From my perspective, VMware is aware of an issue:
— appears they have been aware for aprox. 2 mos.
— appears it has to do with VMFS6 configured storage
— appears it begins with 1803
— appears there may be a hot fix, however, the ask from VMware is to build out a debug environment to test
We are moving to our own ‘Plan B’ to keep our Win10 project rolling. This consists of setting up seperate storage configured with VMFS5.
Will continue to update as I see this play out.
Short post on different connectivity states of a virtual machine and how to fix them.
disconnected
A virtual machine is marked as disconnected when the vCenter has lost communication to the ESXi host where the virtual machine is running. The host is marked as not responding. This state is usually caused by a host that has been crashed. Other reasons could be network issues or problems with the vpxa service running on the host.
In this state vSphere HA would usually comes into play and tries to restart the virtual machine on another host in the cluster.
You can quickly reproduce that state by stopping vpxa (~ # /etc/init.d/vpxa stop)
inaccessible
A virtual machine is marked as inaccessible when the host can no longer access the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file. That state can be caused by problems with the storage array or a renamed folder in the datastore.
When there is no issue with the storage array, remove and re-add the virtual machine to the inventory to solve this problem.
orphaned
The virtual machine is no longer registered on the host it is associated with. That state can be caused by deleting a virtual machine directly on a host.
To fix this issue remove the orphaned entry form the vCenter Server. How to remove orphaned linked clones in a horizon view environment is explained here.
invalid
A virtual machine is marked as invalid when the virtual machine configuration format is invalid. It is accessible on disk, but corrupted in a way that does not allow the server to read the content.
Examine the virtual machine configuration and re-add the virtual machine to the inventory. Check vmware.log in the virtual machine directory for error messages.

I have installed VMWare 14.0
on Ubuntu 16.04
(both 64 bit versions) following instructions here.
I made a new virtual machine to install a Windows 7 - 64 bit
, but when I want to power it on to install my ISO file, the workstation says:
Unable to change virtual machine power state: Disconnected from virtual machine.
There is no hard disk issue; I have 59G available and this VM needs maximum 40G hard disk.
What is wrong or where can I find the cause?
EDIT 1:
I have tried sudo /usr/bin/vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
; this is what I’ve got at the end:
Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor failed
Virtual machine communication interface done
VM communication interface socket family done
Blocking file system done
Virtual ethernet failed
VMware Authentication Daemon done
Unable to start services
This will happen if you haven’t configured vSphere HA, or if the HA failover failed, make sure you noted down all the concerned VMs before doing these steps.
The solution is to migrate the disconnected VM to a working Cluster Node.
Here are the steps that will solve the problem until you repair the failed node.
1) Disconnect the failed ESXi
2) Remove the whole ESXi (and therefore all its VMs)
3) Browse the datastore with the remaining ESXi
4) Add the VM to the datastore inventory (.vmx file)
5) Power on the VM
6) Choose “I moved it”
That’s all 🙂

VM error VM DISCONNECTED
Hi!
I note in my laboratory vmware tasks are not performed.
I see in the log that puts the virtual machine is TURN OFF :
«Processing srvind04 Error: VM ‘ ******* ‘ ( ref: ‘ vm- 451 ‘ ) is ‘ Disconnected ‘ «
In copies of Hyper — V for example no problem and done correctly .
I have seen that I have the verion 8.0.0.817
I’ll try to install the patch 8.0.0.2021 8.0.0.917 or to see if the error is resolved .

If the VMs are in a vmware cluster they performed the jobs ?
It is the situation that I am in the Virtual Machines tab.
Within the cluster I have two host vmware but within each virtual machine does not show any .

What do you mean by «performed the jobs»? VMs present inside cluster can be backed up without any issues. They should be also reflected in «Virtual Machines» node. If that is not the case, open a ticket with our support team, as I’ve recommended already.

Sure, VM in the cluster can act just like the one from standalone host.
Could you clarify your goal?

My goal is for backup of these machines are made. But the error log is offline VM appears alone.
· I will try to eliminate backlogs . Remove the VMware cluster and add them back .
Thanks Shestakov for you attention

We can confirm that VMs existing within cluster can be backed up and replicated without any issues. If for some reason that doesn’t happen, please, open a ticket with our support team and let them investigate it directly. Thanks.
